Hello,
Today the Wikimedia Foundation would like to introduce a new community
blog. It's called "Diff" (diff.wikimedia.org) and is a blog by – and
for – the Wikimedia volunteer community to connect and share
learnings, stories, and ideas from across our movement. We'd like to
encourage you to learn more about Diff and how it can help you in
sharing and learning from your fellow Wikimedians.
Everyone is invited to contribute!
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/07/14/welcome-to-diff-a-community-blog-for-…
The name “Diff” is in reference to the wiki interface that displays
the difference between one version and another of a Wikipedia page. It
also reflects the “difference” our communities and movement make in
the world every day.
For some background, Diff builds on lessons and experiences from the
Wikimedia Blog, the Wikimedia Foundation News, and Wikimedia Space;
previous posts from these channels are archived on Diff. The channel
is primarily intended for community-authored posts, in which
volunteers can share their stories, learnings, and ideas with each
other.
Diff offers a simple and accessible editorial process, moderated by
Foundation communications staff and open to volunteers, to encourage
participation from all — especially emerging and under-represented
communities. Additionally, content on Diff can be written and
translated into languages to reach a wide audience. Diff also has a
code of conduct and comments can be flagged and moderated.
Still curious to learn more?

[To all Wikimedia projects, minus mailing lists with an active
discussion already.]
On August 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation board of trustees may decide a
rename to "Wikipedia Foundation" and various other things.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/Boar…>
Following a community meeting, a proposed open letter was written:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_open_letter_on_renaming>
«We ask the Wikimedia Foundation to pause or stop its current movement
renaming activities, due to persistent shortcomings in the current
rebranding process. Future work should be restarted only in a way that
ensures equitable decision-making.»
(Sorry for the crossposting. When replying, be mindful of cc. Do
consider forwarding to language-specific discussion venues with a short
translated introduction, or translate the pages on Meta.)
Cheers,

Hi Patrick,
That screenshot is of the Wikipedia app, not the Commons app. :) But
hopefully the Wikipedia app team will see your post.
Best regards,
Josephine

Hi all,
Hope you are safe and well. We've just released v2.13 of the Commons
Android app[1] to beta, which includes:
- A new media details UI, which includes the ability to zoom and pan
around images
- When the user uploads a picture with a geotag, the app will check for
Nearby places that need photos around that location, and one is found, it
will ask the user "Is this a picture of Place X?"
- Modifications to Nearby filters based on user feedback
- Bug and crash fixes for stuff that got broken by the codebase overhaul
Our next release will likely contain structured data integration, bookmarks
for the Nearby map, and a couple of other new features.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement - feedback, bug reports,
and suggestions are always welcome in our GitHub repo[2]. :)

Hoi,
Hay Kranen created a proof of concept where Commons is searched for
pictures that (per standard) use a "depicts" statement.. The search is
limited to existing labels in Wikidata and to the search has as its result
whatever is available in commons..
Use for instance "appelmoes" and you get six results [1], [2].
At this time you can get a "detail" screen and it provides standard
functions available. The functionality can be prettified. Essential is that
everything will be internationalised / localised. The other thing is that
I hope is that functionality like this becomes standard Commons
functionality...
On a more philosophical note, we are a WIKI, it follows that we will work
to make more and more pictures searchable in this way and that we get more
and more labels in all of our languages. It is however NOT necessary that
from the start it needs to be perfect. Please do not let perfection be the
enemy of the good. Improvements is what we should aim for and perfection is
what we aspire to.
Thanks,
GerardM
Oh and again Hay, thank you so much.

Dear Wikimedians,
We are happy to announce that the 2019 Picture of the Year competition is now open.
The Commons Picture of the Year is a competition that was first run in 2006. It aims to identify the best freely licensed images from those that during the year have been awarded Featured picture status. This is the fourteenth edition of POTY.
Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons (FP) during the year 2019, to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and historically relevant images, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.
Two rounds of voting will be held:
* In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final.
* In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To vote, you must be an established Wikimedia user with more than 75 edits before January 1, 2020.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2019 page on Wikimedia
Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:POTY/2019/VOTE
Round 1 begins on 8 March 2020, 15:00 and ends on 22 March 2020, 23:59:59 [UTC]
Round 2 begins on 5 April 2020, 15:00 and ends on 19 April 2020, 23:59:59 [UTC]
Thanks,
POTY 2019 committee

In https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images/es where says:
"Hay actualmente *235 642* imágenes que han sido marcadas como imágenes de
calidad, lo cual es aproximadamente el $percentag de las imágenes
disponibles (59 506 030)."
must be say: "Hay actualmente '''<tvar|qinumber>{{PAGESINCATEGORY:Quality
images}}</>''' imágenes que han sido marcadas como imágenes de
calidad, <tvar|percentage>{{formatnum:{{#expr:({{PAGESINCATEGORY:Quality
images|files|R}}/{{NUMBEROFFILES:R}} round 5) * 100}} }}%</>de las imágenes

the translate tool doesn't work fine with wikicode. Regards!!!!
