Hello friends,
I am afraid I have to pass along some sad news about an old Winedaler. Betsy Beyer Hadlock (summer 1981) died a couple of months ago in Dallas; her family posted this news on her Facebook page last week. I really don't have too much information beyond what they state there. My sister managed to find a police report indicating that she was found in her condo and the cause of death was listed as unknown. Betsy had struggled a lot with mental illness for several years.
Betsy loved Shakespeare and Winedale as much as she loved anything in her life. I'm sure anyone who was in the 2000 reunion class with her will remember how much it meant to her. We will do something to memorialize her this summer at Winedale. Tomorrow would have been her birthday, so please have her in your thoughts.
Thanks, James
I'm so sorry to hear this. When I saw Betsy perform in 2000, I was pleased that she was so happy to be there -- she had had a tough summer in 1981.
It occurs to me that we've now lost both the first Angelo (Alan Fear) and the first Isabella from the first summer staging of MEASURE FOR MEASURE -- and both far too young, of course.
Thank you for letting us know, James.

Betsy had a ferocious, courageous heart, and was a great friend to everything and everyone connected to Shakespeare at Winedale, including Camp Shakespeare and Outreach and the AFTLS fall performances. When she fixed her gaze on you and told you something in that deep, husky voice, you listened and took heed. I do indeed remember how much the 2000 reunion meant to her, and I'll never forget her surprise poem for Doc and all of us in our final circle outside the Barn before the performance. It was a triumphant moment.
Anyone who knew Betsy both worried about her and adored her and wished for her to find happiness. Most remarkable to me was that through all her struggles and ups and downs she never stopped seeking ways to give to others, to help others realize their dreams.
James, thanks for letting everyone know, and I look forward to honoring Betsy's life and spirit at Winedale this summer.
Love to all,
cs

Thank you for sharing...I can still picture her from the 2000 reunion performance. And hear her voice. Very sad, indeed.

Not news that's easy to share, so thank you, James, for passing it along and for the promise of honoring her spirit this summer. I can still remember Betsy's Isabella, the intensity with which she filled that character. I can't say that I knew her that well, but you didn't have to to grasp how much Winedale meant to her, how deep in her bones it lived. Sad to know she's no longer with us.

James: thanks for circulating this and thanks for the earlier phone call. It is very sad news indeed. She will be missed. Yes, Mike, we have lost Allen from that class too, but also Greg Higdon (Autolycus) and some told me last year that Diane Wilson passed away. I do not know if that is true. Hope not.
Camp Shakespeare session 1 will be performing one of those '81 plays this summer, 2 Gents.

Tis indeed a great sadness to hear of Betsy. I also remember her surprise poem at that 2000 reunion circle. She delivered it beautifully and with great soul. May she rest in peace. Anon, dear Betsy.
