Washington Post obituary for Lonn Taylor, which includes a mention of his time at Winedale, his work at the Smithsonian and his love of Texas.

I missed this in yesterday's Washington Post; thanks for sending the link. Lonn Taylor made an outsized impression on me (and probably my class-mates) even though he was only 33 at the time. He was an imposing presence (though always smiling) and I was actually surprised to read that he was only 79 at his death. What an interesting career he had.

Anyone who remember things differently, please feel free to correct me here!
What I admired about Lonn was how much he loved his architectural-historical charges, the buildings of Winedale, and their contents and skillful, marvelous decoration. His scholarship ignited him. He loved giving tours, or at least speaking at the start or finish of them, I don’t quite remember; he had much more authority than any other 33-year-old I knew at the time (if I did; of course, my age group was supposed to think anyone over 30 wasn't worth talking to, unless lit was Doc! and, um, hm, I see now, lots of other people). What a lucky compromised idealist I now know I was to have moved into a new era inspired by Winedale. Lonn was an important part of that. RIP, Mr. Taylor.

He made a memorable impression my first time at Winedale, Fall 1973. Very distinctive voice and manner. Jerald

In addition to all the career accomplishments that I was not aware of, it was amazing to realize that he was only 30 years old when I first met him. Guess I sound like a real Anciano, but that now seems like youth to me!
And I do remember a beautiful vintage Martin parlor guitar in his home.
