Robert's wife Barbara Chisholm Faires and his daughter Rosalind hosted a surprise toast for Robert this evening at the Vortex Theatre in Austin, and Robert was genuinely surprised and delighted. Robert is leaving his position as the Arts Editor for The Austin Chronicle after 35 years! You really cannot overstate his contribution to the Austin Arts community in those years. His -30- column will run on Thursday in the Chronicle. I'm looking forward to it and will post here.
So proud that we share Robert in this Winedale community and grateful for the ways he has used his platform to highlight Shakespeare at Winedale over the years.
I'm really looking forward to reading what's next from you, Robert. Cheers and congratulations!

Wow, congratulations, Robert! I’m a big fan of your writing and I know Austin will miss your insights! Cheers, Casey

I love you, Robert, the Ding to my Dong! I loved reading everything you wrote and I've been proud and happy to have known you before you wrote for the Chronicle, while you wrote for the Chronicle and now after you've written for the Chronicle. You are a wonderful writer and were the perfect reviewer. I remember that once upon a time you attended a workshop for art reviewers and you came back reaffirmed in your belief that the reviewer should always be on the side of the artist. You were always on the side of the artist. And the artists (including me) always knew it, appreciated it and were invigorated by your criticism as well as your praise. I'll miss you in that role, Robert. But I'm so happy that you'll get to explore another aspect of your writerly self. To end as I began-- I love you, Robert, the Ding to my Dong (that's a Winedale reference by the way so don't get the wrong idea, folks!) Terry

Many congratulations, Robert. Thirty-five years. Has it really been that long. I remember when you took over from your predecessor, a competent but somewhat sluggardly fellow that just hadn't raised the coverage of dramatic and concert arts up to the level they needed to be at th Chronicle. What was that guy's name? Stockton? Stokebridge? Stokestay? No matter. The point is you raised the bar to where it needed to be and, perhaps more importantly, kept it going for over a third of a century. More than I can say for myself or Stokestory.
And Terry is right. Absolutely right. A critic/reviewer must always be on the side of the artist. I realized that when I was covering the arts in Austin in the early 80s, both for the "Texan" and the "Chronicle", and you realized it also, as was evident in your reviews. Even when you didn't give me the best notices, I knew you were on my side, because you were right and you were fair. You told the truth, to the readers (including me, which was of particular help). That's your job, to artists as much as anyone else. And you did it for thirty-five long years.
Hope you find something as rewarding to keep you busy now. And I hope the Chron finds a worthy replacement. They'll have some big shoes to fill.
All my best.
John

Say it ain’t so, Robert!
Can it really be 35 years? What a run. That means for more than half my life, I’ve had the pleasure of looking forward to picking up the Chronicle each week and knowing your voice would be in there somewhere in the Arts section. I think you and I were still housemates in the pre-“Slacker” era when I received my first Robert Faires review…! (I still remember each one vividly. Yours and John Bustin’s.) You’ve seen and covered so much in those 35 years, and observed and commented on so many remarkable changes. I hope you’ll pull together some of your favorite pieces for a printed collection, or consider writing a history of the arts in Austin.
The Chronicle won’t be as fun, smart, or interesting without you. Thanks for all you’ve done, especially to help foster a high standard for in-depth arts criticism and reporting in this community, and for always celebrating the value of the arts and championing local artists. It made a difference, for a long long time. Toasting you with my morning tea. Cheers and enjoy your next adventure!

PS And thanks Madge for sharing this bittersweet news and for keeping an eye out for the -30- column. I have a feeling I’m going to need a box of tissues handy when I read it.

It really feels like the ground has shifted, now that Robert is stepping away from being an institutional pillar of the Chronicle. To be honest, it makes me want to go back and reread everything he's written. (And also to say, Robert, that it would be nice if you wrote a bunch more.)

Who is Robert? what is he, That all our swains commend him? Holy, fair, and wise is he; The heaven such grace did lend him, That he might admirèd be.
Is he kind as he is fair? For beauty lives with kindness. Love doth to his eyes repair, To help him of his blindness; And, being helped, inhabits there.
Then to Robert let us sing, That Robert is excelling; He excels each mortal thing Upon the dull earth dwelling; To him let us garlands bring
Thank you Robert for all that you have done for Shakespeare at Winedale and Camp Shakespeare!

Such shivers as I read this. Not being one of the anointed few (many?) who know Robert Faires, I did not want to pile on. HOWEVER, Doc’s inspired rededication of this poem nearly brought me to tears. Despite the fact that I know none of you past 1973-74, I feel I know you nonetheless. Don’t ever think that this group of alums doesn’t keep up with what all of you are doing and that we are not moved by all of your exploits.

Robert! Congratulations on this milestone! I have been gone from Austin and Texas for so long, but I can well imagine the mark you (of all people) have made! Kudos to you, and all my best to you and your family! Maria

What an incredible run, fellow Robert! I've been reading your columns and reviews since arriving in Austin in 1989, and have always looked forward to them, even when I was dreading / anticipating you reviewing a show I was in (although, even in that dread, I knew any criticism you had would be even handed and warranted).
Hopefully I'll keep reading your work elsewhere, seeing you on the stage, getting to work with you on the rare occasion, and seeing you and yours around town.
Congratulations on a hell of job well done!
