I learned yesterday that Gloria Hickey, manager for the first 30 years of the Winedale Historical Center, suffered a heart attack two weeks ago and is now slowly recovering with the help of daughter La Donna and rehab folks. A friend told me that she is also showing signs of demential. I thought it would be great where she to hear “get well” greetings from the ancients. There only contact I have is P.O. Box 71 Round Top Tx 78954.

Thanks Doc, I will send a card. She was such an important part of our times there. I have enjoyed seeing here over the years for events. I hope she does well. Jerald

I love Gloria and loved her horses! I'll see if I can find a horse related card to send to her. Sigh. Poor little chicken, as my Mom would say. loveTerry On Monday, September 2, 2024 at 06:23:01 PM EDT, Jerald Head jlhead1952@gmail.com wrote:

Doc, Thanks for letting us know. For me, she is woven into many sweet memories of Winedale - I fondly recall Texas two-stepping with her at our farewell hootenanny at the Barn in '83.

Dearest Doc and all, I’m on it. And so glad to hear that Gloria is being taken good care of and that her daughter is with her. Thank you for connecting us all so we can send her notes. She is such a beautiful human being, and however brief our meetings were over time, it always made me happy to run into her and her lit-up smile. Love you all. Alice

Thank you for the alert, Doc, and I’ve enjoyed reading all the notes about Gloria and reminiscing about all the wonderful moments with her. (I wish I had a photo of you and her two-stepping, Mark! My memory from that night is of a whirling polka on the stage with Rosalee…).
I loved walking into the office to say hi to her during my summers (she’d always holler from her desk upstairs if she was busy), or seeing her under the tent in later summers when I came out to see the plays. I was delighted to bump into her twice in the spring of last year and each time she seemed spry and joyful and friendly as always (the first time was at a polka concert on a Friday night at the Rifle Hall, the second was when she was volunteering at the annual Winedale quilt show in the classroom one weekend). Something ageless and strong about her always. And gentle. As a kid from Austin who never spent summers on a farm or ranch, I think she was the first “country person” I really got to know over time.
I sent off a card yesterday with a photo of Indian paintbrushes outside the Barn and hope to hear good news about her recovery as the fall goes on.
My memory of my first day at Winedale is that Gloria was the first person I met, as I didn’t know where the Barn was and parked at the office to orient myself. In this vision from 40-something years ago, she cheerfully says hello and then points the way to me, and I begin walking down the road towards the row of tall loblolly pines.
Later that evening, at our welcome reception, I took the slide photo below, which includes some other folks from the Winedale community we knew and loved – one of my favorites from that glorious summer.
Love to all,

Clayton, this is an awesome pic. It brought tears to my eyes, really captures Gloria's beauty & sense of humor. Such good times. The pic of Rosalee and Delphine reminded me of the Hunters Stews and the German community singing rousing songs with such heart & spirit. It was indeed great fun! One night in particular Rosalee had such a good time Doc was concerned she was going to fall into the stew; fortunately, she was detoured by that loving group. They took care of each other. I always left there feeling so loved as I've always loved all of you, my hearts!

Clayton, thanks so much for the wonderful photo. It really captures Gloria’s spirit of joy and fun. Like you, I am hoping for better news down the road.

Love to all,
cs

I learned yesterday that Gloria Hickey, manager for the first 30 years of the Winedale Historical Center, suffered a heart attack two weeks ago and is now slowly recovering with the help of daughter La Donna and rehab folks. A friend told me that she is also showing signs of demential. I thought it would be great where she to hear “get well” greetings from the ancients. There only contact I have is P.O. Thanks, Sweet Doc, for this update about Gloria. I'm sending out a card today with prayers for her speedy recovery. Gloria's beautiful smile and good humor was a constant source of inspiration. We first met in 1980 & I remember how pretty she was and how young! We ancient folk have been so blessed.
