I've been rereading Durrell's Alexandria Quartet (as one does) and came across this passage mid-way through the first novel in the Quartet, JUSTINE. The as-yet-unnamed narrator of JUSTINE is quoting a passage from her diary in which Justine quotes the poet Laforgue's Moralités Légendaires--a passage she first learned from her French lover Arnauti. So this got me curious about Laforgue, and it turns out that it comes from his riff on Hamlet, which I reproduce (with a translation from the French) in the attached screenshot.
