Mark Lovell, mid-90's Winedaler, is leaving Austin for Northern CA. We're
having a farewell party for him at the Dog and Duck on Thursday, Feb. 9.
Mark will be holding court from 5-9pm. Drop in and wish him well--we're

Hi everyone --
Rob Moncrieff, a student from last summer and a few summers before that, made this 5-minute video from footage he took at last spring's Festival of Play at Winedale. I think he caught some nice moments and I'm delighted that we finally have some Winedale Festival of Play footage on youtube!
2010 Reunion attendees will recognize Maya Lawrence (interviewed outside the Barn at the end), who performed a Puck speech under the pecans that Saturday afternoon, having recently played the role at Camp Shakespeare.
Also featured are some lovely photos of the festival by Caroline Poe, mother of Ly Poe, another Camp Shakespearean.
I hope this will be the first of a series of Outreach videos we can share with you over time.

Hello Winedalers all --
I am working on a grad class paper (which I hope to publish eventually) on modern performances of the Second Shepherds' Play, with a focus on Doc's work with students on this "little play" over the years at Round Top, Winedale, and La Grange.
I am conducting interviews via email for now, until I get a contraption to record phone interviews. I want to be sure to get exact quotes for this.
If you worked with Doc on any of these 2 Shep experiences, or played a role in one of them, or saw any of the performances, please send me a note at cstromberger(a)mail.utexas.edu and I'll get back in touch with some questions.
I am already in touch with some of the 2 Shep veterans (Madge, Stan, Noah Sgovio, Emily Leitko) but would love suggestions about other folks to track down.

For those of you who knew our beloved Lizz Ketterer, you will want to
hear about an event in her honor organized by some of her friends and
colleagues at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford, where she did
her Ph.D. They are walking from Stratford to London--retracing the
steps Shakespeare himself may have followed--to raise money for a
trust that will help to pay for other Winedale students to study in
England as she did.

think it is a great project for remembering Lizz.

And is there anyone of this list in D.C.? I'm doing a symposium /performance at George Washington University tomorrow night. Bruce tells me his daughter Rebekah is coming. From what I understand the performance is free and open to the public. It's going to be in one of those hideous ballrooms so it won't be your usual theater undertaking. But I've done this show in classrooms, convention centers, assembly rooms and once in a back alley at midnight (really! and it was fun!). So I'll make it into something watchable despite the venue.
Here's what the organizers told me: The event will begin at 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 3. It will be held in the Continental Ballroom on the third floor of George Washington's Marvin Center. Here's a link to the building's website: http://gwired.gwu.edu/marvincenter. Generally speaking, it's best of people either take cabs or the Metro to this part of town. The Foggy Bottom Metro stop, which serves the blue and orange lines, is only two city blocks away from the Marvin Center.

Then we'll indulge in Thanksgiving dinner (it IS time for the Stokes-family recipe of egg-nog by then, ain't it?), tumble our tryptophan-besotted selves into the Challenger (Reincarnation Number 4, by now, I expect), and stagger ourselves to San Francisco (at a reasonably leisurely pace).
By "stagger," I mean: help me plan out the perfect route. I'm thinking Death Valley, Sequoia National Forest, Kings Canyon, some airplane boneyard (like the Mojave Air and Space Port), Joshua Tree, whatever Arizona and New Mexico have to offer -- it's a damn fine Euler's Shortest Route problem, ain't it. Pick two or three or so. At the least it will keep us on the the US Highways and off those eff-ing interstates (damn you, Dwight D. Eisenhower!). We have a few days to spare. I await your suggestions. Let's make this trip count.

I speak for myself: I ain't got many more road-trips in me -- none, if the 1% have their way and deprive me of Social Security and Medicare in my waning days -- and this is one I NEED to have before the gout sets in and I can't sit up for long. John is having is own medical problems, but he assures me that driving long distances isn't one of them. By popular acclaim we'll try to take pictures and broadcast them for as long as ATT and the iPhone allow.
