Hi folks,
I've been working on the Upload to Commons Android app[1] for the past few
months as an Outreachy project (which was recently completed
successfully[2] :)). A few changes were made to the app to make
categorization of pictures easier, via suggestion of nearby categories and
more flexible category search. However, there are lots of improvements
(documented on our GitHub page[3]) that we couldn't fit into the scope of
the Outreachy project. I would love to be able to continue working on the
app to improve it further - hence an IEG proposal.
My IEG proposal for the app involves:
- Fixing long-standing bugs and looking into old crash reports to try and
prevent them from recurring, to provide a smoother user experience
- Making several enhancements to the app to make it more user-friendly and
newbie-friendly, new location-based features (e.g. a list of nearby
articles lacking pictures), and further enhancing categorization.
- Increasing awareness of non-Wikimedians about this app to grow the
contributor base
Several of the proposed features are based on previous suggestions by
users, and I would very much appreciate more feedback and suggestions! If
you are interested, please do take a look at the current proposal[4], feel
free to ask questions and make new suggestions on the Discussion page, and
review it as you see fit. If you would like to be part of the project,
volunteers and additional advisors are always welcome.
Thank you so much!

Hi all,
I've been working on a project to improve the categorization of
pictures in the Upload to Commons Android app
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T115101> as part of the Outreachy
Dec '15 program, which is soon drawing to an end. To summarize, 3 new
features have been implemented in this app:
1. If a picture with geolocation is uploaded, nearby category
suggestions are offered (based on the categories of other Commons
images with similar coordinates)
2. If a picture with no geolocation is uploaded, nearby category
suggestions are offered based on the user's current location. This is
optional and only works if enabled in Settings.
3. Category search (when typing in the search field) has been made
more flexible, whereas previously this was done solely by prefix
search. E.g. now searching for 'latte' should be able to return 'iced
latte'.
The latest version of the app is v1.11 and can be downloaded at
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons>.
Please feel free to leave feedback or bug reports at
<https://github.com/nicolas-raoul/apps-android-commons/issues>.
I have had an amazing time working on this app as part of the
Outreachy program, and I greatly appreciate all the support and help
that the WMF community has given me. :)
Cheers!

Hi,
I'm working on a project to improve the categorization of pictures in the
Upload to Commons Android app <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T115101>
with Nicolas_Raoul and Niedzielski as part of the Outreachy Dec '15
program. I'm very much just starting out, so I'd love any feedback or
suggestions that anyone might have.
We are planning on two major phases/releases for app updates, with Phase 1
enabling category suggestions based on the picture's location, and Phase 2
enabling more flexible category search results. It would be a huge help if
we had some volunteers to test these releases (planned for Jan and Feb
respectively), so it would be great if anyone could download the app <
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons> and try
it out. The source code and issues are stored on GitHub <
https://github.com/misaochan/apps-android-commons>.
Many thanks! :)

Still a couple days available to offer yourself as Wikimania
scholarships committee member, or as ambassador for your community.

Oggetto: [Wikimania-l] Invitation to Wikimania 2016 Scholarship Committee
Data: Sun, 1 Nov 2015 21:11:05 +0000 (UTC)
Dear Wikimaniacs,
we are now calling for a scholarship review committee.
This year, we additionally want a scholarship ambassador for each major
geography or language, including a representative from each entity which
pays for additional scholarships; the ambassadors will be committee
observers.
The scholarship review committee is an important and diverse group of
volunteers who help to run the scholarship program in accordance with
the pillars
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars> of
this Wikimania. We encourage people from all Wikimedia wikis to apply
for this position so that the committee can handle applications in many
different languages.
The main duties of the committee members prior to Wikimania 2016 are:
* Participation in periodic online meetings with scholarships program
manager and other committee members.
* Review and edit communications material (e.g. Scholarship wiki,
application questions).
* Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.
* Assurance of due consideration and speedy response time to Wikimania
scholarship applications in multiple languages.
* Work with the local team.
For further information please visit m:Wikimania/Scholarships/Tasks
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania/Scholarships/Tasks> (the
committee will also be polishing this page).
We are looking for Wikimedians from all over the world, who are:
* fluent in written English and have good communication skills, or can
name local community member(s)/ambassadors who help them with
English translations.
* discreet and able to handle confidential applicant information, and
objectively assess candidates.
* willing to review scholarship applications in late 2015/early 2016.
* having either or both:
o previously attended Wikimania.
o strong knowledge of the cross-project Wikimedia community.
You will be working remotely. While we hope that scholarship review
committee members will enjoy Wikimania 2016 by giving significant input
to it, the local team cannot guarantee financial support for the
committee members' travel expenses since scholarship review committee
members may not apply for a scholarship themselves.
If you're interested in serving on the scholarship reviewing committee
and/or as scholarship ambassador, *please send us an email at
domande.wikimania(a)wikimedia.it*. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to contact us.
Deadline to apply is *Sunday, November 15, 2015*. The local team will
contact all candidates and publish the list of scholarship committee
members right afterwards. Please help with translations on
wm2016:Scholarship committee
<https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarship_committee>.
Proposed timeline
* Nov 1–Nov 15: Call for Scholarship Committee
* Nov 16–Dec 6: Preparations of the Scholarship Committee
* Dec 6–Jan 9: Submission time

Greetings,
I am pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the
2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections. This year the Board and the FDC Staff
are looking for a diverse set of candidates from regions and projects that
are traditionally under-represented on the board and in the movement as
well as candidates with experience in technology, product or finance. To
this end they have published letters
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/Call_fo…>
describing
what they think is needed and, recognizing that those who know the
community the best are the community themselves, the election
committee is accepting
nominations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015#Informa…>
for
community members you think should run and will reach out to those
nominated to provide them with information about the job and the election
process.
This year, elections are being held for the following roles:
*Board of Trustees*
The Board of Trustees is the decision-making body that is ultimately
responsible for the long term sustainability of the Foundation, so we value
wide input into its selection. There are three positions being filled.
More information about this role can be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/Board_e….
*Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)*
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) makes recommendations about how to
allocate Wikimedia movement funds to eligible entities. There are five
positions being filled. More information about this role can be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/FDC_ele…
.
*Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) Ombud*
The FDC Ombud receives complaints and feedback about the FDC process,
investigates complaints at the request of the Board of Trustees, and
summarizes the investigations and feedback for the Board of Trustees on an
annual basis. One position is being filled. More information about this
role can be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/FDC_Omb…
.
The candidacy submission phase lasts from 00:00 UTC April 20 to 23:59 UTC
May 5 for the Board and from 00:00 UTCApril 20 to 23:59 UTC April 30 for
the FDC and FDC Ombudsperson. This year, we are accepting both
self-nominations and nominations of others. More information on this
election and the nomination process can be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015.
Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's
village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the
talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list,
board-elections(a)wikimedia.org
