Hi folks,
The Wikimedia Commons app [1] (a community-maintained Android app that
allows users to upload photos to Commons from their phone) was funded via
an Individual Engagement Grant [2] last year and has several new features -
a list and map of nearby places that need photos (based on Wikidata),
category suggestions based on the image title, prevention of duplicate
uploads, and a new tutorial to educate new users on what types of photos
should or should not be uploaded. During the grant period, 20554 new files
were uploaded via the app with an overall deletion rate of 15.74% (11.7% in
the final two weeks after the new tutorial was implemented), and 3485
images that were uploaded via the app were used in Wikimedia articles.
While we are very happy with the progress made, there are many other
improvements that we would like to make but were not able to fit into the
scope of the previous grant. Thus we are proposing a renewal [3] of the IEG
in order to work on these. Highlights of the proposed improvements include:
- Enhancing the "Nearby places that need photos" feature by (1) allowing
users to upload their image directly from a location on the list or map,
with suggested title and categories based on the associated Wikidata item,
and (2) displaying the user's real-time position on the map to allow easier
navigation to the location they wish to photograph
- Improving user education by displaying Commons account and user talk
notifications (e.g. picture nominated for deletion) in the app, adding a
gallery of featured images, and adding various notices and explanations in
the upload screen
- A sleeker, more intuitive, and more interactive user interface - a
floating action button for uploads, "Nearby places that need photos" in a
tab alongside the user's contributions, and a panel to display Commons
account notifications and information about the nearest place that needs
photos
- Various technical and quality-of-life improvements, such as two-factor
authentication login, multiple uploads, preventing overwrites, and fixing
memory leaks and battery drain issues
We are especially excited about the "Nearby places that need photos"
enhancements, as we feel that it can help reduce the number of geo-located
Wikidata items that lack pictures, and provide pictures for Wikimedia
articles that lack them. We believe that this is one of our main strengths
as a mobile app - users can have a seamless workflow where they can browse
the places that need photos, select one and move to the location, and then
directly upload the photo after taking it (with relevant titles and
categories suggested), all within the same app and without needing to use a
computer.
Please do take a look at our proposal [3], feel free to provide feedback
and make new suggestions on the Discussion page, and/or endorse the
proposal if you see fit. If you would like to be part of the project, new
volunteers and additions to our diverse team are always welcome - please
visit our GitHub repository [4] and say "Hi". :)
Many thanks!
Regards,
Josephine (Commons app project maintainer)

Hi all,
We're excited to announce that we've rolled out several new features and
bug fixes for the Commons Android app[1] over the past few months. Some of
the major ones include:
- A map of nearby places that need pictures (in addition to the existing
list). Selecting a nearby place allows users to see the associated Wikidata
item, get directions to the place, or view the associated Wikipedia article
- A new and improved UI, including a light and dark theme, a navigation
drawer, and a logout option
- Fixed memory issues preventing users with older phones from accessing the
app
- Licenses now include CC-BY 4.0 and CC-BY-SA 4.0, and licenses can be
selected individually when uploading a picture
- The total number of pictures that have been uploaded from an account are
now shown, and the image details pane now displays the upload date and
image coordinates
Thank you for your support and encouragement though all this time!
Feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub
page[2]. :)

Hi
The http://leontina.whpdcrmbikini.com website mentioned in Today's Topic:

Could be quite innocent but best proceed with caution.

Hi all,
We're excited to announce that we've rolled out several updates and
bugfixes for the Commons Android app[1] over the past couple of months.
Some of the major ones include:
- Automatic addition of geocoding template if uploaded image is geotagged
- Category suggestions based on the title entered for the image
- New, more detailed tutorial to educate new contributors on what types of
images should or should not be uploaded (special thanks to Pine for sharing
his Commons educational script which was used as the basis for this)
- Check for whether or not the file already exists on Commons, to prevent
upload of duplicates
Additionally, the kind folks at translatewiki.net are helping us set up a
translation project for our app, so hopefully localization should improve
in the near future.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement thus far! Feedback, bug
reports, and suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub page[2]. :)

Hello, Wikivoyage community!
My name is Daniel Bogre Udell and I'm a co-founder at Wikitongues, a
non-profit organization and international volunteer community dedicated to
defending linguistic diversity. We're building the world's first public
archive of every language in the world, and counting some very enthusiastic
Wikimedians among our ranks, we're excited to announce that we've submitted
a proposal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Feature_Set…>
for
this upcoming round of Wikimedia Project Grants to support Poly, an open
source platform for sharing and learning languages.
Poly stands to improve the language content for both Wiktionary and
Wikivoyages by creating a broader network of language content aggregation.
Through it, the breadth of these projects will be expanded and their
language accuracy improved. Furthermore, in gaining access to new language
communities working with Wikitongues, Wikipedia stands to benefit from the
incubation of new language editions.
We're eager for community feedback, so if you think there are more points
of alignment between Poly and Wikivoyage, please let us know in the
project's discussion section
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Featur…>
.
Finally, if you believe this project to be worthwhile, we would be honored
to have your endorsement, which you can enter in the project's Endorsements
section
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikitongues_Poly_Feature_Set…>.
We would also greatly appreciate it if you can spread the word among your
fellow Wikimedians.
Thank you very much!
Warmly,
Daniel Bogre Udell

Hi all,
I've been working on improving the Wikimedia Commons Android app[1] for the
past couple of months. In addition to several bugfixes and minor
improvements, we've just rolled out a new feature - a list of nearby places
that need photos!
This feature pulls locations without photos from a file maintained by the
Wiki Needs Pictures[2] project and arranges them in order of proximity to
the user's position. Tapping on an item in the list brings the user to
their phone's map app with the coordinates pinned. To access this feature,
select 'Nearby' (or the icon of a guy with a flag) from the action bar
(menu) of the app.
The current implementation is a very basic/bare-bones version, as we want
to gauge users' response and feedback before working on any enhancements.
So please do try it out, see how it works for you, and feel free to report
any bugs or suggest any enhancements on our Google Group forums[3] or
GitHub issues page[4].
Please note that you will need to allow the app to access your location in
order for this feature to work. Also, as the list is rather large, initial
loading might take a while.
Thanks!
