Hello all,
a few reflections from the swedish horizon, after a few days under the WMF
umbrella:
We have had an influx of serious, logged-in contributors, mainly from
Wikipedia in swedish, but also a couple of new stars. That's great!
We have also had a number of serious anonymous edits. That's even better!
Of course, we have also had our fair share of vandalism, both anonymous as
well as logged-in users. That's less nice, but it was expected.
So, thanks to all involved, it seems we're all well on our way!
Judging by the serious edits we have had on sv:, I have come to realise
that two guidelines/policies are crucial to us in this phase of the
project, namely "Welcome, Wikipedians" and "How to re-use Wikipedia
content". The latter guideline has a correspondence on Wikitravel Shared (
http://wikitravel.org/shared/How_to_re-use_Wikipedia_content), but I do not
see any current correspondent on any of the other language versions, except
sv:.
I checked the language versions (i.e. the ones currently online) and it
seems that it:, nl:, pt: and es: lack "Welcome Wikipedians". All language
versions except sv: seem to lack "How to re-use Wikipedia content".
I'd like to suggest that anyone with lingustical capability, active on the
language versions without these two guidelines, translate these guidelines,
since it will be of great help to you. On sv:, we also added the
aforementioned guidelines to our welcome message, in the hope that it may
reduce the amount of explanation needed. It seems to work!
All the best from a snowy and cold Sweden,
Riggwelter/Mattias
Dear all,
I'm pleased to be able to announce that Wikivoyage Hebrew [1] and
Wikivoyage Ukrainian [2] have been opened today and are now open for
editing.
These are the first Wikivoyage editions that started completely new on
Incubator (there were a few pre-existing pages in Wikitravel, which the
contributors made use of, but no really developed wikis); and also the
first two not in Latin script.

That is not necessary. Anything you send to the list is automatically
forwarded to all subscribers; that is the main function of mailing list
management software.
There may be a list of subscribers available on one of the list's reference
pages; some lists provide that, some don't, and I do not know what this one
does. However, some people, including me, would be distinctly irritated if
you grabbed that list and used it to contact us directly rather than through
the list.

The Google PageRank for English Wikivoyage's Main Page suddenly plummeted
from 6 to 0 just recently. It would be great to have Google Webmaster
Tools so that we could check for an explanation of what went wrong, and
potentially submit a request for reconsideration.
My understanding is that we can get these tools by adding Google Analytics
to the site (in order to "claim" the site), and can do that by adding a
<meta> item to our root URL. Does anyone know who to follow up with to
make that happen? I'd be more than happy to take a lead with follow up
with Google afterwards, if that role would need filling.
Thank you,
-Peter
Dear all,
I wanted to update you on behalf of the Affiliations Committee that we are
now considering the application of a proposed thematic organisation to
support WikiVoyage, the WikiVoyage Association, the erstwhile stewards of
the project.
You can see the proposal at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikivoyage_Association
We would like to invite you to participate in the discussions, express your
interest to join the organisation and inform your home communities about
this proposal. In particular, we would like to encourage people from around
the world to apply for membership to represent the diversity of the
Wikivoyagers.
We will be monitoring the talk page at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikivoyage_Association to see if there
is any new information that might influence the recognition process.
If you have any related information you would like to share with the
committee privately, please write to <affcom(a)lists.wikimedia.org>.
----
A bit of background:
Wikimedia thematic organisations are a new type of movement organisation,
that are similar to chapters in supporting the Wikimedia mission through
their activities in the real world, but instead of focusing on a given
country, they focus on a given topic or theme.
For more information please see:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Thematic_Organizations.
Usually we send out announcements of new thematic organisation applications
roughly in the middle of the recognition process to allow the wider
community to express any concerns they might have and to be able to join
the organisation when it is founded. This is done in the hope that it will
help new organisations reach critical mass earlier and that the wider
community is informed about emerging entities in the movement.
Next steps in the process include the review of the organization's bylaws,
and the finalization of the standard thematic organization agreement,
before AffCom will be able to make a recommendation to the Board of
Trustees to recognize the thematic organization.
Best regards,
Bence
(Chair, Affiliations Committee)

Oggetto: Information on Tool Labs/ Your help needed
Data: Thu, 7 Mar 2013 10:26:51 +0000 (UTC)
Mittente: Silke Meyer
Hello!
You are getting this e-mail because you have an active or expired
account on the toolserver.
As you might know, Wikimedia Foundation is building a cloud-based
infrastructure (Labs/Tool Labs) that - in the long run - will be a
replacement for the toolserver. Don't worry! The toolserver will be not
just be switched off. WMF and WMDE would like to support you as good as
possible when it comes to migrating tools. There will be enough time for
this process. We will offer different forms of support which you will
hear of soon.
Right now, Tool Labs is not ready. WMF staff, mainly Marc Pelletier is
building it. You might have seen the general list of needed and wanted
features [1]. For many of you crucial features are database replication
and user databases. Both are upcoming features in the nearer future.
Your tools and their dependencies are taken into account to build the
new infrastructure. This is why I am asking you for help:
Please provide information about your tools! I started an incomplete
list at [2] (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Toolserver/List_of_Tools,
based on the wiki and jira).
Personally I was really impressed about its length and diversity - how
cool! Several people said there was so much missing in this list - so
please help me to complete it!
Here is what I'm asking you to do:
* Please check if your tools are on the list (correctly).
* Please fill in your software dependencies, data dependencies, use
patterns (are they running continously? or webservices? Batch runs?
etc.), the license.
* If you have not given your software an explicit license, please note
that only free software can migrate to Labs. Consider putting your stuff
under a free license.
* If you have already migrated your bot or tool to Labs and it is in the
list, please say so in the last column "status".
* If your toolserver account has expired and/or your tool is not active
on the toolserver right now, please add it to the second table at the
bottom of the page. In the last column write that it is not running
currently and if you want to revive it. If you are considering to revive
it, please fill in all the details, too, so that your needs will be
taken into account.
* Please follow the toolserver-announce list for more information to come.
Thanks for your help! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate
to ask me, to ask on toolserver-l and/or on labs-l.
Cheers, Silke
