Whoops. Shows why we need to work more on verifying stuff. Wikipedia is slowly turning into a joke. First Essay, then suicide threats, now hoax sh*t being used in obituaries. What next? Jimbo's gonna be stewing on this.

No offense, but the joke is not on Wikipedia, but on those members of the mainstream press who republished something from a Wikipedia article without verifying the information was accurately sourced. It's not some dark little secret that information on Wikipedia is subject to the ability of people to verify it and revert it if it gets unsourced. There are disclaimers and disclaimers and disclaimers.
I don't think Jimbo is going to be the least bit worried. I know the Foundation isn't.

Yes, I agree with Cary ...When I said "tale of caution," I did mean that we (Wikinews) shouldn't let ourselves fall into the same trap. Since we are a sister project it can be even more tempting to use Wikipedia as reliable source. We should be diligent and dig a little deeper than just the current version of a Wikipedia page.-SVTCobra----- Original Message -----From: Cary Bass Date: Friday, May 8, 2009 12:15 pmSubject: Re: [Wikinews-l] A tale of caution and/or a story ideaTo: Wikinews mailing list Cc: Jay Walsh > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----> Hash: SHA1> > No offense, but the joke is not on Wikipedia, but on those > members of> the mainstream press who republished something from a Wikipedia> article without verifying the information was accurately sourced.> It's not some dark little secret that information on Wikipedia is> subject to the ability of people to verify it and revert it if > it gets> unsourced.
