Hi All,
Wikinews needs you today. Here are a few of the very many areas you could work on. Currently, as I am slightly more active recently, I'm open to collaborate with you on any of the below areas. See if you would like to try a new hobby today! In no particular order:
0 software beta testing
1 write new articles
2 find news which happened today and share it on live chat or a news tip page
3 read drafts in Newsroom, especially those submitted for review, and edit them to make them more comprehensive or more current
4 read drafts in Newsroom, especially those that failed review recently, and address reviewer's comments quickly and re-submit for review
5 chat with new authors (of articles in Newsroom) and help them understand the key concepts
6 subscribe at Wikinews:Water cooler (there are 5 subforums, open each and click 'Subscribe' link at top - then keep a close eye on your Echo notifications) to help newcomers and help with editing articles when someone requests assistance
7 chat on live chat and help newcomers and reviewers with their review process
8 help with software development for authoring or reviewing articles, perhaps for the mobile platforms
9 chat with other contributors on audio or video chat
10 present notes about how Wikinews works at various conferences via audio and video communucations [as we don't have funds for travel at present] this can be linux, programming, journalistical, or wikimedia themed conferences
11 figure out how to get someone to do any of the above through a grant, sometimes google summer of code
12 find high school and university educators who would like to teach their class journalism by asking them to write articles for Wikinews (was done with in the past, and we have extension installed for marking students)
13 collaborate with Pharos on getting more news coverage of the New York City and adjacent areas
14 proofread, or read, Wikinews articles out loud for Audio Wikinews
15 make English Wikinews accounts on various social media like twitter, facebook, blue sky app (sp?), others [in consultation with someone on-wiki first] ensuring you're posting new news articles there with appropriate tags, moderate comments, and setup multiple moderators if possible and document which contributor is in charge of which social network account for Wikinews and how articles are being posted there
You're welcome to message here, me directly, or post a message to https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Water_cooler/assistance to get in touch with a volunteer who can help you get started.
Please check all water coolers at https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Water_cooler as this is a much lower time commitment and your invaluable thoughts could make a big difference.
If you have a colleague, friend, or a Wikimedian who could join one of the above, they're welcome to join this list and/or get in touch.
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Svetlana (Gryllida)
Dear Wikinews Volunteers;
I am writing this e-mail to ask for a contact email address or a phone
number for Wikinews as a news publisher. I am also writing this e-mail to
ask for general consent for the articles on the Wikinews to be used on a
mobile application for the purpose of English language education.
I am currently in the process of developing a mobile application for
English Language education. The application presents users with sentences
from a Wikinews article and asks the users to fill in the blanked-out
words. A link to the full article will be shown on the same page, as shown
in the screenshot provided as an attachment to this e-mail. These news
articles will be retrieved from the official Wikimedia dump files provided
at: https://dumps.wikimedia.org/, hence minimal strain on the Wikinews site
will be expected. I hope the use of the Wikinews articles in the
application will help English language learners learn more efficiently
whilst increasing the exposure and traffic to the articles from Wikinews.
Though no concrete decisions have been made at this stage, it is likely for
the application to be monetized through means of advertisement and premium
features. I also would like to stress that there will be no monetization
conducted by the means of restricting access to certain Wikinews articles.
All users will be able to freely access quizzes generated from any of the
Wikinews articles as we firmly believe that it is only ethical for us to
profit from values that we have provided in addition, and not from the sole
products of volunteers who have contributed for free. There will also be no
use of the Wikinews logo or information that may give users a false sense
of endorsement of the app by the Wikinews community.
The application is currently in the stage of being reviewed before being
published for an open test in the Google Play Store. However, for it to be
published under a News category, it must provide valid contact information
of the news publisher with at least an e-mail address or a phone number. I
shall think an e-mail address of a Wikinews administrator will be
sufficient for this role.
To summarize, I am asking for informal general consent of the community for
the Wikinews articles to be used in this project, and a contact e-mail
address for Wikinews as a news publisher.
I greatly respect the work done within Wikinews and hope that this project
will have a contributing impact on the Wikinews community. If you have any
queries or issues regarding the project or would like to have an access to
the prototype of the application please contact me at pimts98(a)gmail.com. I
would also be grateful to talk to people who are just interested.
Yours faithfully,
Genesis 11 Project Team

[To all Wikimedia projects, minus mailing lists with an active
discussion already.]
On August 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation board of trustees may decide a
rename to "Wikipedia Foundation" and various other things.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/Boar…>
Following a community meeting, a proposed open letter was written:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_open_letter_on_renaming>
«We ask the Wikimedia Foundation to pause or stop its current movement
renaming activities, due to persistent shortcomings in the current
rebranding process. Future work should be restarted only in a way that
ensures equitable decision-making.»
(Sorry for the crossposting. When replying, be mindful of cc. Do
consider forwarding to language-specific discussion venues with a short
translated introduction, or translate the pages on Meta.)
