Matthew Yeomans, a freelance writer, has published a detailed article about the Wikinews project and its community here:
http://citizenskane.blogspot.com/
It was originally intended for a major magazine, and Matthew's work (which included travel to Europe and the United States to interview many Wikinews contributors) was fully funded. But shortly before the publication, the story was "killed", as Matthew puts it. He has now put it on Blogger, alongside an "anatomy" of the story itself.
The story is largely accurate and focuses primarily on the human factor of Wikinews. One error is that Wikitravel is referred to as a Wikimedia project. The article paints a very positive picture of Wikinews, and while it is most regrettable that it was not published in the way intended by the author, this of course underscores exactly what we are doing: breaking down the barriers to publishing.
There's a discussion forum attached to the story.
All best,
Erik
