All, For those of you that have been living under a rock, the new Mediawiki Usability Initiative team released a new skin called "Vector" ( Original announcement: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-l/2009-June/031330.html ). Many of us like Monobook (many also hate it), Vector is supposed to be the new more friendly layout (you can read more about it here: http://usability.wikimedia.org/wiki/Acai_Designs ). I would really appreciate it if everyone took just a few minutes to give Vector a shot, you can try it on any single page by adding ?useskin=vector ( For example: http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page ). You can also turn it on for yourself (While logged in) on your user account by following: My Preferences > Appearance > Vector > Save What is the end goal? We would like to see this become the default on Wikinews here in the short order. While the concern has been raised that vector is still "Beta", it really isn't. It has been released on all WMF wiki's as an option for all users & the code isn't being changed on a regular basis any more (other than to fix rendering compatibility & that is basically completed also: http://usability.wikimedia.org/wiki/Releases/Acai/Compatibility_Matrix ) Who is this going to effect? Only new & anonymous users. Registered users will continue to be able to choose what Skin they use. So if you try Vector, think it is nice, but like your good old Monobook - not to fret - you can keep it. How much pain is this going to cause? Not as much as you'd think. Most of the gadgets & what toys work perfectly fine in Vector. Our resident expert of all things Javascript (Bawolff), fixed most everything a few weeks back. Myself and many others have been running Vector for a few weeks now without incident. How was this marketed? We've had the /topic in #wikinews on IRC talking about vector for more than 2 weeks. We've had the Anonnotice set. It has been tweeted about on @en_wikinews several times. Recently I changed the Sitenotice. Enwn.net had been temporarily hacked to make all URLs append ?useskin=vector . Also this is the last step, notifying wikinews-l and scoop. Why are we doing this? I love Monobook, I thought it was the best skin there was.... That being said, Vector looks nice, is cleaner and most importantly IS NOT a major rearrange. It took me about 2 minutes to acclimate to the minor adjustments, then I was off. I believe that is a true improvement and that it will bring more users and keep them around hopefully just a little bit longer. In addition to that, Wikinews has a small but involved use base - I think it would be quite the PR coup for us to be the first WMF site running Vector as the default. Cut to the chase? Please try out Vector and vote on it. Hi, For my MA dissertation "User-generated content and participatory audiences in journalism" at Newcastle University I am currently conducting research into user motivation and participation. Instead of looking at this topic from the journalists side, I want to focus on why people participate and how people engage in the production of user-generated content in a journalistic framework and if this can create a public sphere for discussion and debate outside mainstream media coverage. For this purpose I am planning to conduct a survey among participants of several user-generated content platforms. Wikinews is one of the obvious choices and I would really appreciate it iif some of you would be able to take 5-10 minutes to participate in this survey. I spotted an article on French Wikinews that copied another source: http://fr.wikinews.org/wiki/Visite_d%27Obama_en_Russie_:_mesures_de_s%C3%A9… On further investigation, I believe Wikinews could copy stories from Russian agency Ria Novosti (en.rian.ru/) in compliance with our licences. iPhone Application

I've been thinking, that it would be awesome if we could get an iPhone application. It could bring literally thousands of new readers and hundreds of new contributors. I would imagine something like the Sky News app, except maybe with audio instead of video and a proper, fully fledged section for people to send in their stories. We could get people around the world contributing from their mobiles, with pictures(and videos!) where they are. I've attached a screenshot of the Sky News app for those interested. Is anyone on Wikinews capable of programming an iPhone app or knows someone who is. Alternatively, might we be able to find someone on Wikipedia etc. who would be willing to do it, if only to add to their "cv"? Thoughts? Tristan Thomas

Meta site for all Wikinews editions

I think that we need such place for a couple of reasons: * Meta is "too Meta" for our needs. We need a meta site which would be regulated by Wikinewsians. * All coordination will be moved to that site: this includes, but it is not limited to: ** Organizing bot work. ** Organizing work related to cooperation: translations, contacts and similar. ** Accreditation process should be moved there. * In the future, we should make Template: namespace at that site which would be used by all Wikinews editions. * We may generate there a set of documents which would help to the new editions how to start a successful edition. BTW, as a LangCom member, a number of times I mentioned that not just localization of the messages should be enough for the project approval. Wikinews edition is the most problematic for approval because it needs constant work. So, as a LangCom member, I would like to see defined rules by Wikinewsians for new edition approval. * Similarly to beta.wikiversity.org, Wikinews meta site may be used instead of Incubator: It would be much better if the process of creation of Wikinews edition would be monitored by Wikinewsians, not by contributors with just Wikipedian background. (While it is good enough formally to have contributors with just Wikipedian background for all other projects, Wikinews has very different needs than one repository of knowledge.) * Optionally, we may use something like wiki.wikinewsie.org for that purpose; but it has a number of limits.

Growth

What is the growth of Wikinews like at the moment? I've found some of the outdated pages that charted growth in different ways, but they haven't been updated for a few years. How many new accounts are created each day, are articles created overall going up or not? If not, do we need to look at how we can get more people to contribute who create an account?
