has been set up and announced in the proper channels:

The English Wikinews writing contest has now officially begun. See

for details. This is a contest of endurance; I will try to maintain a
daily log of the survivors.
I encourage readers from other Wikinews editions to observe the contest
and decide whether it makes sense to implement a local equivalent.

situation today: a Wikipedian at a meetup shows me a collection of at
least 100 beautiful high-resolution photos from Ecuador. Unfortunately,
only a couple of them are on the German Wikipedia, and none are on the
Commons. He's perfectly willing to make them GFDL, though. I offered to
do the uploading for him, but it occurred to me that a more general
solution might be in order.
Hence, I've just launched an experimental file upload service for the
Wikimedia Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:File_upload_service
(please translate!)
The idea is that people who are not comfortable using the Commons
directly (such as non-Wikimedians), or who want to upload a large number
of files, can contact a registered helper who will batch-upload them.
I can obviously only handle a limited number of such requests, so I
encourage anyone familiar with handling an upload bot to add themselves
to the list of helpers. If you can't handle large email attachments, let
me know, and I can give you an account on my FTP space.
Note that this is really a workaround for the Commons not being as
user-friendly as it should be (no single login, no easy upload form, no
batch upload support, categorization requires wiki knowledge).
Eventually, I'd like this to become obsolete.
I'm posting this announcement to foundation-l, wikipedia-l, wikinews-l,
and commons-l, since all these projects are affected. Please
forward/translate the message for other affected projects.

As announced yesterday, I have set up http://uk.wikinews.org/
(Ukrainian) in accordance with the existing language policy and notified
the interested participants. This is also the first time the optional
additional process at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_language_pre-launch has been used.
Related question: Should I continue announcing new Wikinews editions to
foundation-l, or is it enough to post to wikinews-l? I don't want to
spam the list with this. Coming up next is probably Italian.

I care for Wikinews and I think a collaboration between Wikinews and all
those bloggers out there would be a great idea. I´ve also read the
chatlog and I´m curious: Is there a certain place where people discuss
about a "global real-time forum" ? I think a good start would be a
webbased forum (all mentioned people above have access to the web) where
further discussion can take place.

Wikinews passed the 1,000 article milestown today! The story in
question was an original report of a football match. Hopeful the 2,000
mark will come sooner than this one!

might be authorized to use the logo of this firm in
fair use.
For example, when making an article about a movie just
making it for an oscar, it might be authorized to use
a small representation of the movie poster.

I am sympathetic to this, but I think that there needs
to be a fairly
tight policy. As an example, we really can't take a
photo from
Reuters and claim fair use -- our use is too similar
to theirs,
competes with theirs, etc.
I think it's worth discussing at length so we can get
our heads clear
about what the exact bounds should be. Commons-only
is very safe for
now, but your point is valid of course.

I perfectly know that *currently* it is not
compatible.
I understand the current limits to uploads, and the
needs to discuss what should be and not be allowed on
wikinews. While obviously, we can not authorize all
fair use images for the reasons explained by Jimbo
(competiting with sources like AFP in particular), I
think some types of fair use images could possibly be
used by Wikinews. This would require that these types
are extremely well defined and strict respect is made
of these limits.
Use of a firm logo is not likely to make us in trouble
with other news sources, so that might be one of these
cases which might be tolerated. On wikinews, not on
wikicommons of course.
As for ESA, a petition is currently under way to have
it release some images under a free license.
