If a bunch of wikimedians in Mumbai are interested, we could plan a Mumbai celebration on 15 Jan too.
Some others have been in touch with me on this; should we plan a small brainstorming meeting for this?
Alternately, we could go back and forth on this list or on wiki for a while.
Please do indicate if you feel something should be planned for Mumbai, and if you are interested in being part of making it happen.

Would be great to do something for the 10th anniversary and do some preliminary brainstoring on this list for ideas.
Any wikimedians in Mangalore?

hi,
January 15, 2011 is a Saturday. It would be worth doing the event here in Mumbai.
Possible ideas: 1. Possible screening of the Truth in Numbers: http://www.truthinnumbersthemovie.com/ http://www.truthinnumbersthemovie.com/2. Introducing Wikipedia to Municipal Schools: http://www.karmayog.com/lists/awardschool.htm - in Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and Kannada wikipedias which medium schools are present in Mumbai. http://www.karmayog.com/lists/awardschool.htm2 a. Enlist help from organisations which does computer literacy drives in municipal schools. 2 b. Enlist help from language wikipedians to go to these schools and introduce Wikipedia - perhaps over a week?
warm regards, Pradeep
Both sound like good possibilities - I saw Truth In Numbers at wikimania in Gdansk; it's almost 90 minutes.
Harriet: any thoughts on 2, given your experience with the Digital Bridge Foundation, OLPC?
(We could do both 1 and 2 if enough wikipedians enter the fray).
Should we keep the conversation going on the list, wait for other ideas to emerge, and meet before November end to take this forward?
Cheers Bishakha

Hi Bishaka
Where can we get a copy of the film: "'Truth in Numbers' to do a screening? I could plan an event in Mangalore and maybe one in Goa (Nirmala institute of Education) we have been working with them on the OLPC programme. It is a teacher training college which has its sister organisation in Mangalore (Roshni Nilaya). I could build on what Hari has done earlier at St Aloysius and St Agnes....if he still has the list of earlier participants to the wiki academy event.
*For item 2*. Municipal schools. DBF works with two colleges in Mumbai where student volunteers will be going to the Govt schools in Raigad district during Dec and Jan. Rekha who is subscribed to this list should be able to dovetail it with their programmes as she now handles DBF projects. She's on leave now but will talk to her when she gets back.. These are primary schools but their teachers could be enthused to contribute and use wiki. . Do call the folks at Reliance Webstores. I'm sure they can help in a major way getting students to come to their RWorlds for translation Jams ... they have broadband facilities and Video Conferencing to connect folk. if you have a good proposal with a WIIFM... they may be able to partner in the !0th year celebration in some way.
regards
Harriet
PS: My own knowledge is rather rudimentary and I need to learn way more about it all myself first before diving in at the deep end!

hi,
I think we could do a couple of test runs with private schools who are interested before running into municipal schools. Also, we will have to find out what sort of permissions are required and what their computer infrastructure is like.
It would be cool to have a Reliance NetConnect or a Tata Photon Plus connection for a week at these schools or allow them a WiFi connection. Working further with their CSR teams, the companies can be free to provide this service for a longer term to these schools.
We can also check if these schools welcome us for Wikipedia Academies in the future as well.
As far as Truth in Numbers go, its website quotes a price of $20 but no idea on shipping to India. any idea on whether a DVD is locally available in India?
Any work with old age homes or orphanages?
I think we should also post a note on Wikiproject Mumbai page and perhaps spread the word more?
Also reaching out to orgs like BNHS to help improve natural science articles, post or improve work on Indian handicrafts, with Maharashtra Tourism to work and improve articles on Tourist destination and wikitravel pages, with Shamiana or film makers to do a series of short films on Wikipedia in India in local languages, work with Observer Foundation or INTACH to work on heritage and maybe photo groups on Flickr to take photos to add to the wikimedia commons. Just ideas and examples.

hi,
Wikipedia now has a brand new page for its 10th anniversary celebrations: http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and also has a new mailing list for the same - https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikix-l
You'll have to create a login to access the wiki.
I have posted a note on the Wikiproject Mumbai today pointing to both Wikimedia X anniversary celebration as well as the Wikimedia Mumbai mailing list.

Hi,
A wonderful Idea.
Just to add to Point No. 2 - why do we limit ourselves to Municipal schools. Why not also send volunteers to Private Schools and Colleges in Mumbai to encourage becoming a Wikipedia editor. These kids have all the facilities and are probably well versed with Wikipedia, just to encourage them to contribute with articles.

Hi, Best wishes for 10th year celebration. If at all you happen to visit schools or any other place if one needs to make presentation or just wants other Marathi friend to know more about Marathi Wikipedia , we do have one online (google) powerpoint presentation .Any one can access and update it at https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dctcbsf3_1g7fxfvdt . Like wiki any one can edit any time so before any presentation at public place make a point to crosscheck the same .

It's a good idea to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wikipedia on 15th ( or 16th ?) January '11.
