This is relevant to all those who have written to the various lists and
asked how one can participate. volunteer or help in any way.
We need people to upload images to Wikimedia Commons.
- We face a problem in that photographers are willing to go out & shoot
and donate images. But they are unfamiliar with Commons and do not upload it
there. However, we find that they know Flickr and are willing to upload it
under a suitable Creative Commons license.
- There are hundreds of free images on the net, we can show you how to
locate them. These can be uploaded to Commons. We are at this point of time
interested in images pertaining to India only.
It is a job requiring patience, care for details and intelligence as the
images need to be categorised also. Where relevant we would like to add them
to articles too.
We need a small TEAM of three to five - people, age, sex, religion, etc,
etc, no bar, except that they should have:
* Knowledge of uploading images to Commons
* know how to categorise
* know how to load images into Wikipedia
* Possess good judgement.
* Possess an abiding love for Wikipedia and willing to contribute to it.
If you are interested, let us know. This is a serious commitment under the
"India Loves Wikipedia" initiative. Dont apply if just for "time paas".
Helpers will be awarded barnstars at a suitable date after the project is
done.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India chapter - Executive Committee Elections 2011
Please note that the last date of nominations for Executive Committee Elections 2011 of Wikimedia India chapter is Aug 29, 2011
With less than 3 days to go for the last date of nominations, there were just 2 nominations for the 3 vacant posts.
This is very disappointing and concerning for the future of Wikimedia Chapter India.
I sincerely appeal to the veteran Wikipedians / Wikimedians of India to come forward and help grow the chapter.

Dear All:
We have instituted a monthly call between the India Chapter and the Wikimedia Foundation. Members of the Chapter EC, Hisham and Asaf Bartov (who heads up Global South Relationships at the Foundation) will participate in this call. The objective of the call is to share information and improve collaboration between the Chapter and the Foundation on various Wikimedia projects of relevance to India. We had the first one on Aug 24, 2011, and here's a quick update.
Chapter Update
30 persons attended the workshop on Copyright and Open Licensing conducted on 30th July 2011 in Bangalore, which was well received. http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Events/Copyright_and_Open_Licensing_SeminarPlan
Plan to conduct 1st WikiAcademy with the Department of Public Libraries, Karnataka for their senior Library professionals on 12 Sep 2011.Membership currently stands at ~80Participation from community on some projects but the response is below expectations. Chapter hopes that the response will improve as more activities are taken up by Chapter in the near future.
AGM will be conducted on September 24 2011. Elections process for EC vacancies has been initiated.Process for applying for FCRA prior permission has been actioned with necessary steps being taken with local banks, consultants and the WMF. The bank account required for FCRA is ready. The draft of letter from WMF will be finalized in a week by Chapter Accountant and Advisor (another prerequisite) and then FCRA application will be submitted. 3-4 months are required for approval by Home Ministry, Government of India.
Foundation Update
Education Program is doing well from a numbers perspective - with more than 1000 students involved. However, there is a great deal of effort required to continue to support and enable and motivate these students. Additional Campus Ambassadors are being selected from the participating institutions. Hisham requested that everyone reach out and be encouraging to the Campus Ambassadors, students and teachers.
2 new staff members selected; Nitika has joined & Shiju will be joining by OctoberInitial conversations were being sought with leading mobile companies to explore Wikipedia on mobileIndependent public trust to be set up hopefully by next week, followed by FCRA prior permission and other approvals required for tax exemption, etc.
Collaboration on future projects
Some requests from colleges to participate in campus ambassador like program were received by the chapter and Hisham. Hisham said that till the ongoing program is stable, he will not be able to roll it to other cities. He suggested that colleges can get started by forming student clubs and Foundation staff are providing necessary information and assistance for the same. He also requested Chapter EC to extend their support for the same.
Chapter seeks active involvement in the elections and looks to grow its membership base and expand it's reach in encouraging the use and contributions to the Wikimedia movement in India.
Thank you.
Best,
Gautam

Who owns a song – the person who made it or the person who paid for it? Is
piracy organized crime or class struggle? Are alternative artists who want
to hold rights over their art and go it alone in the market, visionaries or

is changing the contours of the market.
Metal heads who market their own music, folklorists who turn tribal

everything they can get their hands on, anti-piracy fanatics who think
piracy funds terrorism, a smooth talking DVD street salesman who outlines
the efficiency of the illegal market, media moguls, lobbyists, “monetizers”,

Hello friends,
The WikiConference is going great guns and each day more progress is made
and more things are becoming real. :)
Health issues have kept me offline or on low level of activity for quite
long now. As I was occupying the post of Secretary, the load went onto the
Chairperson Pranav Curumsey & Treasurer Pradeep Mohandas. Uncomplainingly,
they have taken the load. I'm grateful to them for the support they have
constantly given me and the faith they placed in me. However, as the
Conference comes closer, more things need to be done and a lameduck
Secretary is a liability. This is not fair to Pranav/Pradeep, the hosting
communities or the Conference working group. For this reason, I'm stepping
down so that another in greater health can give the Conference the time and
attention it deserves.
In WikiConference 2011, the Secretary's post is being occupied by a
Wikimedian from Pune. Accordingly, Pune Community has requested Mandar
Kulkarni, who works in Marathi Wikipedia and is an active member of Pune
Community to please carry out these duties. I request all concerned to
please give him the support and goodwill that you gave me.
I want to thank all the good friends and colleagues on the Working Group,
Mumbai & Pune communities and also the members of the Advisory group, WMF
office and the Chapter for the help, companionship, camaderie and support.
But be of good cheer, though AshLin cant provide regular clockwork type of
work required from a Secretary, he is still around to help organise the
WikiConference, alongwith you but in a manner which gives him a few breaks
(without feeling guilty).
I am planning to work on Outreach and also help any team requiring
assistance, besides supporting all concerned. Feel free to approach me in
these regards,
Thanks once again, everybody.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

With the very kind assistance and support of the Homi Bhabha Centre for
Science Education, we are holding a workshop from 10-6 on Saturday, 27
August, 2011 at the Gnowledge Labs.
We will be developing a routine to sort through the 7070 applications for
scholarships according to the rules set with discussions by the community
for awards of the scholarships, the call for which was extraordinarily
enthusiastic, reflecting the level of keen anticipation amongst persons
interested in Wikimedia activities for a pathbreaking conference of this
nature. We expect to substantially complete the task of sorting through the
bulk of the applications submitted, helping us arrive at the final list of
awardees, and generating stats that will provide a baseline for the future
organisation of such important events.
The workshop will be open to all, except to persons who have already
submitted an application for a scholarship to attend the conference. If you
have submitted an application, therefore, please do not attend this
workshop, but we welcome and look forward to an equally enthusiastic
response for participation at this workshop from all in the community in
Mumbai, who can spare a day for an exhilarating session.
Please note that the Gnowledge Labs has electrical and wireless net
connectivity, but the workshop attendees must bring their own workstations
(laptops, netbooks or tablets).
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

I think what Pradeep meant is for the next one it be between Dadar and Sion (as per the rotation around Mumbai). We have had quite a few meetups in Bandra and will continue to go back there on rotation.
