Hello everyone,
It is a pleasure to be introduced to you and I'm very much looking forward
to visiting next month. I came to Mumbai last in 2005 so I am interested to
see what has changed!
Might I expand on what Pradeep has mentioned and say that working with
cultural organisations (GLAMs) doesn't need to be only focused on editing
the article *about* the organisation but can be much broader than that. This
can be everything from bringing historical documents to the web for the
first time (via wikisource/Commons), using primary source documents to give
better footnotes to articles (from libraries/archives especially), taking
photographs of objects in musems etc. etc.
Think big, but also think about what advantage there is for the cultural
institution. Of course we can see the advantage of having the cultural
institution's expertise more freely available to the world, but they are not
necessarily so aware of what we can bring to them. It is important in every
GLAM partnership that the cultural organisation is aware of what they want
to receive (e.g. better awareness of their subject, more kudos from
international organisations, more visitors to their website,
translations/digitisation of their content...) and to make sure that they
can measure this benefit at the end. Otherwise, there will be no way the
person you are working with can report to their boss and say "this is what
we did with Wikipedia, this is why it works well, and this is what we should
do next year!"
I look forwards to meeting everyone soon,
Sincerely,
-Liam Wyatt / user:witty lama

hi,
If there are any people in the group who edit this category of articles and
are from Mumbai, we'd love to meetup once before Liam comes to Mumbai.
I had suggested to Bishaka and Liam that doing something in the J J School
of Art made sense to get students interested. They know something about art
and can help with contributions. If you guys disagree or have a better place
for such a meetup do feel free to suggest it on the list.
warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

Dear wikimedians in Mumbai,
It's a pleasure to informally announce that Liam Wyatt (user wittylama)
will be in Mumbai 12-14 February as part of a longer visit to India to do
some GLAM work.
Liam recently became a Wikimedia Fellow -
http://blog.wikimedia.org/blog/2011/01/19/announcing-our-glam-fellow-liam-w…
As part of this, his visit to India is intended to support wikimedia
communities to explore the possibilities of collaborating with Galleries,
Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) in strengthening articles on
wikipedia of mutual interest.
Liam was the wikipedian in
residence<http://blog.wikimedia.org/blog/2010/07/10/the-royal-cup-bridge…
the British Museum last year - I attended his presentation on this at
Wikimania in July 2010 and was struck by the possibilities it threw up of
working with GLAM institutions.
We're extremely lucky to have Liam with us; how can we make his visit
productive for all?
I propose a meetup/workshop for sure; somewhere central so that more
wikipedians can attend - and so that representatives of GLAM institutions,
many of which are based in south Mumbai can also participate. (Maybe
something longer - so we can really learn from the experience...)
Cheers - and let's welcome Liam to Mumbai,
Bishakha
PS- The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2011 is also on in Mumbai when you are
here, Liam.
