I would advise against running again next year. For one, next year
won't be the Western Hemisphere's "turn", so right off the bad we
would be at a disadvantage. Plus if we wait for one more year,
hopefully WMC will have completed an initiative or two and will be
strong presence to support the bid.

The strongest bids are likely to be Toronto and Australia. The jury can only pick between the bids that are entered. If Australia drops, Toronto will be very strong. By starting now on the bid, we can get a running jump start. I have a friend who has informed me that if we can get Reno in for 2011, the contacts are available to get extremely competitive airfare for both years.

Bidding for 2010 is unlikely to open up for quite a while, but you are
correct that everyone has commented that there will be a strong want
for a Europe/North America Wikimania in 2010...

Even if the jury was impressed by that, it is extremely doubtful that
Wikimania would be held on the same continent two years in a row.
Sorry, but I don't think this would help "secure" a Wikimania in Tornoto. :-(

Like movies? Here's a limited-time offer: Blockbuster Total Access for one month at no cost.
http://tc.deals.yahoo.com/tc/blockbuster/text4.com
I notice that the jury left open a strong possibility that returning to North America will influence the 2010 bid. I think we should start ASAP with a official bid for 2010. Someone mentioned that Australia might be a strong adversary. I came up with an idea that might secure Toronto Wikimania.
I am looking into forming a Wikimedia Chapter for the Western United States and sub chapters for several western states. If this comes to fruit, I would be willing to trade support for 2010 in toronto if Canada was willing to support Reno or San Diego in 2011. To win over Wikimedia Australia, we could offer to partially subsidize their airfare.

All acts referenced below were canadian. I would rather not go through fifty separate US corporate acts :)

Since you folks are calling for bylaw changes...
I went through the Corporation Act and was unable to find restrictions on youth membership. I also went to the Cooperative Act and noticed that Youth members are specifically guaranteed suffrage.
Would a cooperative model be cheaper than a corporate model?

Hi everyone!
The minutes of the last meeting have now been posted to the meeting page
<http://tinyurl.com/2cev5f> . Main discussion points were proceeding with
the incorporation (submitting by-laws to ChapCom, lawyer, etc.), by-law
details, and youth involvement. Jeff was added as a member of the Steering
Committee.
We also decided to go back to having meetings on Wednesdays and to hold off
for three weeks until our next meeting which will take place in Teamspeak on
April 9, 2008. For more information or to RSVP please see the
<http://tinyurl.com/3aaxj5> meeting page. As we are coming very close to
submitting the by-laws, we decided that most changes to the current
<http://tinyurl.com/2pkmgq> draft of the by-laws should be discussed on the
mailing list and made before the next meeting.
Sorry that this e-mail is a little late as I forgot about it in my drafts.

I think it is presumptuous to assume there is any punishment rendered for attempting to win a bid. In respect to the jury comment, it seems they are stating there was a lack of clarity on the firmness of the offer of facilities for the University of Toronto.

I'm perplexed by this statement from the jury...
"However, the jury felt that Buenos Aires' bid showed stronger organization overall. Additionally, much of the information in the Toronto bid was carried over from previous bids, and it was unclear how much of a commitment for the University of Toronto facilities there was specifically for 2009."
While I agree most info are the same between the 2008 and 2009 bid, we did add a lot more information. It sounds like they're trying to compare whether our bid improved between 2008 and 2009. And it sounds like they're punishing us for running in the bid twice in a row. Next year it will be even more unlikely that we'll win the bid even if we did significant improvement because Australia hasn't has a chance to host it.
