Women's History Edit-a-thon @ Harvard, March 29th!

Hey everyone, Just announcing another Boston-area edit-a-thon that will be taking place on Friday, March 29th at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society... As it is Women's History Month, we will be focusing our efforts on editing and adding to articles on notable women. The event is one of a bunch being held around the world in conjunction with WikiWomen's History Month<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiWomen%27s_History_Month>, a project to increase female participation and representation on Wikipedia. Hackathon/Editathon on April 6th in Boston

On the edit side of things we'd love to focus on improving wikipedia's coverage of open web technologies (notable libraries, languages, design patterns, etc.) but we're happy to have anyone come and contribute on an article they're interested in improving. The hackathon side is completely open. We people to get excited about contributing to Wikimedia projects technically but we're also looking forward to see cool things get done to user scripts/styles, the API and data derived from Wikipedia. I'm going to add a page on Wikipedia proper soon enough. The details there should basically mirror those on Meetup.com. Please email me (or leave a note on my talk page) with any questions. meet in Boston next month?

Hi wikimedians, We've had good turnout at the last few monthly meetups, but we've been missing some of the folks who live on the Boston side of the Charles. We've talked periodically about alternating between Boston and Cambridge. I'd like to propose that we meet in Boston next month. Please chime in and let us know if this would make you more or less likely to come. One possibility is encuentro5, which is right near Park Street Station/Downtown Crossing. However, please let us know if you have an alternative idea. Perhaps someplace close to Northeastern? Best, Gabe

Hello, Wikimedians in Boston! This Participation Support request from a User who works with the Boston City Archives is to attend the upcoming Open GLAM Launch in Berkeley: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation:BostonCityArchives/US_OpenGLAM… . Before making a decision about whether or not to fund the request, we wanted to gauge the interest of some local Wikimedians in working with the Boston City Archives. Does anyone have experience working with the archives, or is anyone interested in getting involved with their work releasing their digitized images on commons, or does anyone have other information that might be useful to us as we're considering the request? By the way, for those of you who may not have heard much about the Participation Support Program, it is a reimbursement program that funds the travel costs of contributors who are participating in events such as meetings and conferences. It doesn't fund participation in Wikimedia-movement-organized events such as Wikimania or events organized by local chapters - requests for scholarships to attend those events should still go through the event organizers (who are welcome to apply for a grant through the WMF Grants Program: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index). Hello Boston folk! HubSpot, a Cambridge based software company, will host a Wikipedia event on Saturday March 9, from 10am-3pm. Help guide the license regime for edX

Dear friends, edX has not yet settled on a licensing standard. Harvard is developing its licensing policy this spring, and looking for community input. They are supporting a weekend-long legal hacking challenge, for creators, educators, developers and lawyers to work through the legal/policy/social challenges implied by such regimes. I highly recommend coming to this challenge; with a suitably free licensing framework, edX could do much more than "provide a new source of massive online courses" and truly revolutionize the sorts of learning materials available to everyone. The cost of participation is $30 (roughly the cost of the meals provided), but fee waivers can be arranged on request. The announcement/invite sent out to legal groups follows. SJ ==== The 2013 Hack IP Challenge will bring together students from across the Boston Area to work on a tough legal/policy challenge over the course of a weekend (February 22-24). The topic: the intellectual property policy for HarvardX, the Harvard division of edX, the online education platform. While HarvardX has already begun offering courses, fundamental policies around what types of intellectual property can be used and assigned, and how third parties can use HarvardX materials remain unanswered. These policies are being developed currently, and the decisions that Harvard makes will impact the future of online education and the entire higher education landscape. Students join teams to produce model policies. They will hear from Professor Larry Lessig on Friday night, work with coaches from around the Boston area and hear from an expert panel on Saturday, and present their results to a panel including Professor Zittrain and Jonathan Hulbert (of the Harvard University Office of General Counsel) on Sunday afternoon. Planning for event in March -- question

Hi Boston folk, I have a contact in Cambridge that's interested in hosting a meetup in March. I would probably be in town for it (for those that don't know me, I live in SF, but family is in Boston, so I always love an excuse to visit :) This would be similar to the event we did a couple weeks ago at EchoDitto: first an introduction to Wikipedia for newbies, followed by a less formal edit-a-thon, time for meeting/chatting, etc. I see that you have a regular meetup scheduled Monday March 11 at 7pm. Would it make sense to combine these events -- for instance, have the Intro session at 6pm, and then have your regular session start after? Or do you already have a location you want to stick with? I'm happy to steer them either toward having a separate event, or toward hosting you guys, depending what makes sense. As many of you know, Aaron Swartz, a longtime member of our wikipedia group and dear friend, took his life on Friday. Aaron Swartz Memorial Ice Cream Social Hour - 1/18 (Friday!)

Friday, January 18, the Atrium at the MIT Media Lab, 5:30-7. Aaron Swartz was a friend, a Bostonian, and a Mystery Hunter. Codex would like to invite members of the community and participants in the Mystery Hunt (that's you!) to remember our friend, collaborator, and teammate with stories, jokes, discussions, and pictures. He touched many who did not know him personally, and we hope you join us to celebrate his life and mourn his death. Ice cream generously provided with the help of the Free Software Foundation.
