Whoops, that should be ASMM - the American Society for Microbiology
meeting. Formed through the fusion of the previous two largest ASM events,
this will be the largest known colony of μbiologists in the universe — 10k
biologists, 3500 posters, 10^18 microorganisms — at the Boston Convention
Center.
ASM will have a wiki editathon on Sunday Jun 19, which needs facilitators.
Some attendees have already been to an editathon earlier this year, so it
may go beyond a normal newbie workshop. If this sounds interesting &
you're game to coordinate w/ admins on en:wp and commons, please sign up!
[And if you root for wikispecies too, noone will judge].

Accepted facilitators get a pass to the full conference — geek out about
optics, viral warfare, and CRISP gene tailoring; see Bill Gates keynote &
find out why 640kbp ought to be enough for any body.

8:15am to 12:15pm at the Boston Convention Center). If you’re interested in
participating as an on-site facilitator during the edit-a-thon — by helping
novice editors get started and answering participant questions — sign up
here: http://bit.ly/ASMwiki. You’ll receive complimentary registration for
the ASM Meeting (or reimbursement, if already registered). Experience
editing Wikipedia is strongly preferred.
Dear Boston-area Wikimedians,
Mark your calendars for an edit-a-thon focusing on indigenous women: Strong Voices Indigenous Women, taking place Thursday, April 7 from 4pm-6pm. The edit-a-thon is sponsored by Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Harvard University Native American Program.
We'd love for you to join us in a celebration of the artistic, political, and professional contributions of indigenous women. No previous experience writing Wikipedia entries is necessary. Wikipedia experts and research librarians from Harvard libraries will be available to help you write and edit your entries. A list of possible subjects, printed reference materials, and online resources will be provided to support the work. New ideas and resources are also welcome. If you cannot join us in person, you can also participate remotely. Refreshments and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Schlesinger Library will be provided for those attending the edit-a-thon.
This edit-a-thon is part of the Initiative on Native and Indigenous Peoples at the Radcliffe Institute, and related events are listed here: http://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/academic-ventures/research-initiatives/nat….

Hi New England Wikimedians,
I'd like to let you know about two events that are being planned for the
Art+Feminism campaign in Maine next month.
One event would be in Portland, Maine, at the SPACE Gallery:
http://www.space538.org/
The other event would be in Rockland, Maine, at the Rockland Steel House,
Center for Design, Technology + Education:
http://www.rocklandsteelhouse.com/
Both events could use very much use the help of an experienced Wikipedian,
if there is any volunteer that thinks they can join up there.
Thanks,
Richard

Dear Boston Wikimedians,
We're hosting two editathons and a workshop at MIT!
This Friday (22nd) we will have a workshop on teaching with Wikipedia, from
1-2pm. This is meant for professors and other instructors who want to use
Wikipedia in their classes. This will be followed up from 2-5p by an
introduction to how to edit and an edit-a-thon on general topics.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/IntroToEditingWikiped…
Next Friday (27th) from 1-5p we'll have another introduction to editing
workshop and an edit-a-thon themed around black history, especially black
history in STEM fields.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/WritingBlackHistory
Both workshops will be on campus. All are welcome! Registration links and
more info is on the pages above.
Let me know if you have any questions.

New England Wikimedians may be interested in this upcoming talk at the
Berkman Center in Cambridge. It will also be livestreamed for those (like
myself) that can't make it.

*2/2 - Engineering Open Production Efficiency at Scale*
*12:00pm, Berkman Center for Internet & Society *
Wikipedia, largely used as a synecdoche for open production generally, is a
large, complex, distributed system that needs to solve a set of "open
problems" efficiently in order to thrive. In this talk, computer scientist
Aaron Halfaker uses the metaphor of biology as a "living system" to discuss
the relationship between subsystem efficiency and the overall health of
Wikipedia.

Hello everyone!
There's already been a lot of inspiring reactions to the the Year of
Science, so I'm delighted to say that the Wiki Education Foundation (Wiki
Ed) is officially launching our Year of Science work in the USA and Canada
today.
There's a blog post pointing to the work we're doing:
https://wikiedu.org/blog/2016/01/19/wikipedia-year-of-science/
There's our Year of Science page for academics and their institutions,
describing what we're doing and how to contact us:
http://wikiedu.org/yearofscience/
And finally, we're handing over the reigns to the Wikipedia Year of Science
Portal to community members, so they can share ideas, news and events
related to the WP:YOS (that's a shortcut! or):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Year_of_Science
We'd love to see what chapters and projects can do with this theme, so
please spread the word freely! We're also hoping people will use
#yearofscience or #YoS when they do.
We're looking forward to seeing what we can all do together.
(Apologies for cross-posting).
