Hello everyone,
I am writing to share with you the evaluation report for Wikimania 2023,
Wikimedia movement's largest activity, which took place virtually and in
person in Singapore, in August 2023. The report covers results from the
attendee and scholar surveys, as well as the impact of our communication,
social media and media strategies.
The report was written by a team of colleagues from the Wikimedia
Foundation Communications department, and you can find it here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2023:Evaluation
Here is a brief summary of the main findings:
- Wikimania 2023 was the largest Wikimania to date, with 2866 Wikimedians
from 142 countries attending - 761 in person and 2105 remotely.
- The theme for the 18th Wikimania edition was Diversity. Collaboration.
Future., reflecting the goals and challenges of the Wikimedia movement in
the next decade, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Survey respondents were highly satisfied with the event (over 90%), and
felt that it contributed to their learning and sense of belonging (over
90%).
- Scholarship recipients felt that the experience would encourage them to
share lessons learnt with their communities and continue to improve their
overall contributions to the movement.
- Communications strategies were utilized to raise awareness about
Wikimedia amongst youth in ESEAP, as well as the general public in the
region and beyond.
- Wikimania 2023 featured a rich and diverse program, with over 300 main
program sessions, the first ever WikiWomen Summit, a 5-day hackathon,
Wikimedia Basic workshops for beginners, and more.
I hope you enjoy reading the report and learning more about the outcomes
and impact of Wikimania 2023. Please feel free to share your feedback,
comments, and questions on the report's talk page:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=2023_talk:Evaluation
Thank you for being part of this amazing event and community!
Kind regards,
*Butch Bustria*

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Inviting community nominations for the Knowledge
Equity Fund’s next round
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
Today, we are opening nominations
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSctHahuVnJQQNG2eo_3F7aB1Z2jQi1JxhN…>
for the next round of grants from the Knowledge Equity Fund.
The Knowledge Equity Fund was launched by the Wikimedia Foundation two
years ago as a pilot program to advance knowledge equity, one of the two
pillars of the movement strategy, through a focus on racial inequities in
free knowledge.
Since our launch, the Knowledge Equity Fund has gone through several
iterations. Over the past several months, the Knowledge Equity Fund
Committee has solicited feedback from Wikimedia communities on our approach
to supporting knowledge equity. We hosted an open community call
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund/Commmunication#Notes_…>
on October 6 to share more about our approach and discuss ideas for future
knowledge equity grants. Through this conversation and onwiki comments, we
heard consistent feedback
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund/Commmunication#Follow…>
about the need to connect grantees and their work more closely with the
Wikimedia projects. These suggestions have focused on increased
communication and visibility into the work of the Knowledge Equity Fund and
grantees; developing stronger connections between grantees and movement
groups in order to drive direct impact to the Wikimedia projects, which
will in turn benefit our larger mission of free knowledge; and clarifying
the impact of Knowledge Equity Fund grantees.
These are important suggestions that we as a Committee are taking on as we
launch the next round. We’ve just shared a Diff post
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/01/17/we-need-your-nominations-for-knowledg…>
with details on the changes that we’re making moving forward, including a
new Connected Grants pilot that will be available to movement groups to
support existing partnerships with external organizations.
We will also be hosting two community calls to answer questions and hear
suggestions for nominations for Round 3:
-
January 22, 11 am UTC
-
January 26, 3 pm UTC
If you are interested in attending these calls, please email
equityfund(a)wikimedia.org and we will share information to join. We welcome
your nominations for organizations for Round 3! Nominations will be open
through the end of February.

Hi all,
With the announcement of the Knowledge Equity Fund
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund#:~:text=The%20Fund%20….>’s
round 2 grantees, we’ve seen a lot of questions and feedback about the
Knowledge Equity Fund, how the Committee works and how the work of the
grantees will contribute to the projects and to the movement. To help
answer these questions, the Knowledge Equity Fund Committee will host a
community conversation on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 1400 UTC
<https://savvytime.com/converter/utc/oct-6-2023/2pm> to hear ideas,
concerns, and to answer questions. The Committee would also like to hear
ideas for how the fund should be used in the upcoming third round of
grantmaking.
To register for this conversation, please email us at
EquityFund(a)wikimedia.org You can also send us questions beforehand. The
call will be held in English and we will have interpretation in Spanish; if
you would like interpretation into other languages please let us know. If
you’re not able to attend, we will also share notes and a written list of
Q&A after the call.
Thanks,
Nadee Gunasena, on behalf of the Equity Fund Committee
