Greetings!
On behalf of Wikimedia Philippines, the Philippine local chapter of the
Wikimedia Foundation (responsible for websites such as Wikipedia, the free
encyclopedia), I would like to invite everyone to come participate and/or
volunteer in Wikipedia Takes Manila!
Wikipedia Takes Manila is a Wikipedia Takes the City-style photo scavenger hunt,
where teams will go around the City of Manila and take photos of landmarks,
sites and places throughout the City of Manila. This event, the first of its
kind in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, is being organized as part of
Wikipedia X, events being held throughout the world in commemoration of
Wikipedia's tenth anniversary. Everyone, Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians alike,
are invited to participate in this contest. If you can form a team of up to
three people and have a camera plus a love of the City of Manila, come join us!
Prizes await the top three teams.
Wikipedia Takes Manila will be held on Wikipedia Day, January 15, 2011, at 9:00
am PST (tentative). The meeting place for the event will be held at Paco Park,
San Marcelino St., Paco, Manila, while the awards ceremony for teams and a party
for participants and guests will be (tentatively) at Max's Restaurant, Maria
Orosa Ave. cor. United Nations Ave., Ermita, Manila.
For more information, please visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Takes_Manila. Registration for
participants is now open; you can do so at
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dFk0UVBXeXFnZFFUVUFYd1JfQ2….
If you wish to volunteer, you can also send an e-mail to us at
info(a)wikimedia.org.ph.
Thanks and we hope to see you at Wikipedia Takes Manila!

Dear all,
Movement roles project is a WMF project to clarify the roles and
responsibilities of different
entities, groups, and people working to support the international Wikimedia
movement.
For Asian Wikimedians, it is a great chance for us to share our opinions and
views.
That's why i would like to invite you to participate in the movement roles
project.
If you are Wikimedian who already have some knowledge of how the movement is
working,
you can answer the* Initial Questions*:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_roles_project/Initial_Questions
If you are representing your chapter or you are in relevant groups or
cooperative efforts,
you can answer the *Fact Base*:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_roles_project/Movement_fact_base
For Fact Base, the pages for existed chapters and some known relevant
groups and
cooperative efforts are already reserved. You can just edit the page that
you are in.
In fact, you can just finish a part of the questions that you are interested
instead of finishing
the whole set. At least i know somebody did the same thing. But of
course,*it must be the
*
*best if you can finish the whole set, then we can get a complete idea from
you or your*
*chapters.*
*The deadline is in Mid-January 2011. *We will collect and analyse all the
data before
the meeting on 28/29 January 2011.
I am in the working group of this project, so if you have any questions or
difficulties when
you are participating, you can contact me.
Thank you very much. I hope i can see your answers on Initial Questions and
you chapter's
information on the face base! :-)

Perdat ego veni ut plasticum habeant et arachis habeant
Hi there,
Besides our monthly unconference which we had in October,
We at Wikimedians in Kansai participated a regional conference,
Kansai Open Source 2010 (Nov 5-6, http://k-of.jp/2010/), the biggest
Open Source focused event
in our region, Kansai, Japan. As organizers, I'm eventually one of them,
2000 visitors attended this two day conf.
We organized two 50-min Wikimedia related seminars, hosted a booth and
two members gave lightning talks. WMF staff developer Ryan Lane came to give
talks, both slideshows are now available on wikitech.org.
http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/File:Ryan_Lane_-_Wikimedia_Architecture.…http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/File:Ryan_Lane_-_How_to_be_a_part_of_the…
While Both of the two above is in English, thanks to volunteering
translators, User:Takot Takashi Ota and
User:Ciphers. at every talk we could offer translated versions to the audience.
"Wikimedia Architecture", describing how Wikimedia servers are configrated,
was given as keynote and attracted over 100 attendees. A major
Japanese tech blog
featured this talk and it seemed to be one of hot topics of the day in the Net.
"How to be a part of the MediaWiki developer community" was organized
by WiKansai.
36 people came to this talk. It was so many that some of them had to
stand without seat.
Ryan gave the same inviting talk to MediaWiki dev community in Tokyo,
as a part of
Mediawiki focusing conf, Wikimedia Conference Japan 2010 Tech Talk.
Not obviously
credited though, WiKansai got involved to organize this Tokyo event too,
collaboratively with WCJ people in Tokyo who alone organize another
day conf for focusing
outreach to academia.
Also in both cities WiKansai worked well collaboratively with
prominent Japanese geeks,
including KOF organizers, board members of Japan Unix Society
(http:jus.or.jp) and
OpenOffice.org JA native lang project. Although the latter two kinds
of people worked with us
only in their individual capacities, not on their projects' behalf,
we all enjoyed exchanging
thoughts on free knowledge, community participation and tech in general.
The next big event we at WiKansai organize will be for WikiX celebration.
Cheers,

Hi Wikimedia Asians,
(bcc: wikansai(a)gmail.com)
first let me introduce myself to you mates, whilst I hope most of you
and I have
already interacted on internal and/or Wikimania, I'm Kizu Naoko, a
Tokyo-born Wikimedian in Kansai
where I've been in since 1992. On Wikimedia I'm user:Aphaia and on freenode,
I'm britty. So first of all, sorry for your current and possible
confusions in future.
Since Morgan invited interested people, not only chapter people, to
join this list during Wikimania,
it stays in my todo box until this morning. I'd appreciate list
moderators to approve my subscription.
As said, I'm a Wikimedian in Kansai along my other 4 colleagues. We
are no chapter at all though,
it would be nice to share our activity report with you Asian
Wikimedians. Please note some of items
are still in progress and hence confidential.
* Founding *
Wikimedians in Kansai (abbr: WiKansai) was founded on September 15, 2010 as
a non legal volunteer group.
Before that, we had distributed a press release. Most people had
ignored but we got
some favorable responses including Academic Resource Guide, Inc. and
its weekly e-newsletter.
ARG gave us a coverage and at least an academic blogger pick it up.
* Event *
On Septemer 26, we hosted Kansai Wikimedia Unconference #4. 6 people
attended, and two were
non-members. One of those is a former non-profit staffer and now an
aspirant OOo evangelist,
another is a psychologist and professor at a local university. Along
three WiKansai those two ladies
gave talks, on FLOSS community facilitation and demography of a
certain knowledge oriented social media
(http://chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp, an answer.com alike). The professor
gave us WiKansai short interviews too
mainly on our motivation to participate, and has hoped to get a
closer term with us and JaWP community.
* Talk affiliated by WiKansai *
"Get involved into GLAM-WIKI" by Kizu Naoko, at ARG cafe in Kyoto, September 19.
ARG cafe is a sort of academic cafe, hosted by ARG, Inc. In a friendly
atmosphere
around 20 people give lightning talks and people discuss those topics
adjacent "ARG fest".
Regretfully both speech and beer were charged, but quality was quite
good (They served
Guinness). Since the majority of audience had been expected to be
librarians and archivists,
I'd have picked up this topic and mentioned last year GLAM conference
hosted by WMAU,
some collaboration in Europe from Tropenmuseum to coming two confs. I
gave an emphasis
to Tropenmuseum case, because it involved int'l collaboration with
Indonesian, e.g. Asian
Wikimedians. I'd have loved the audience to notice it's already West
Pacific rim initiatives,
which we in Japan belong also.
At ARG fest chats, we found some possible collaborations. See "Plans" section.
" Plans "
Fixed
- October 31, Kansai Wikimedia Unconference #5 at Good-Day (a local
firm which offers us the venue for free)
- November 5, Ryan Lane Wikimedia tech guy will come to Japan and give a talk.
WiKansai got involved to organize his talk along a local conf which
Ryan had invited.
In progress
- November 7, Ryan is planning to give a talk in Tokyo. We organize it
with people in Tokyo
- January 22 or 29, "Wikipedia 10 years" party; planned in Kyoto, we
are now contacting to local firms on possible venue.
a local academic (or the blogger who celebrated our launching) will
give a talk as invited speaker.
Questions, suggestions and cheers are welcome :)
Regards,
