Hi all,
I would suggest a bold move - (and whoever make this list will probably
hate me for it) - to replace this Asia list to Asia-Australia-Africa list.
I think a lot of group to chapters are facing similar issues and best to
share. Also whether you realize it or not, WMID itself are having serious
regeneration issue back in 2010, which we handle quite well fortunately and
things are showing sign of progressing in early 2012 for the effort we done
back in 2010. This kind of list will help bumping anyone who cares to
someone "known" regionally in addition to locally.
Unfortunately I couldn't think of a catchy tag for this new list. (Ok to be
honest I thought of "ASS" but that would be inappropriate)
The new list should be open to *any* chapter members and *volunteer group*
(like Kansai, Kazakhtan, Korea ) without chapters - or even without group
(soloist because their wikipedia only have two editors - for example) who
would like to be active in projects and governance or in replying and
reading a lot of English *erk*
Any takers? WMID member would be happy to organize the list and start
inviting.
Thoughts?
Dear all,
Let me share another event report and news of an emerging user group
from Tokyo, Japan.
Five Wikipedians in the greater Tokyo area including me held a
citation party in Tokyo in the end of this January [1], which was then
followed by another one in Kansai as reported by Kizu-san recently on
this list. It looks like Japanese Wikimedians are getting active
offline here and there!
Like other Wikipedias, the core community of the Japanese Wikipedia
has always hoped to overhaul missing citations for important articles,
which sometimes were overlooked behind the growth of the site.
Following a call by [[User:Vigorous_action]] (who was an organizer of
the Kansai event in February), we gathered at the Chiyoda public
library, in the center of the Tokyo metropolis.
On January 28th, 2012, five attendees spent the whole three hours
intensively adding citations to the Japanese Wikipedia. We had
reserved a conference room with 6-8 sheets as a volunteer group (with
no special cooperation with the staff at the library). All of the
five were experienced Wikipedia editors and they were advised to find
target articles and prepare resources in advance (we expected
otherwise a 3-hour session would be too short to produce meaningful
outcome). Each of us brought (or borrowed from the shelves)
biographies, fact books and other kinds of resources, to carefully
compare statements written on Wikipedia articles and those on the
books. Subject areas we worked on range from linguistics and
philosophy to biology and computer science. After finishing the work,
we shared techniques to choosing articles with rather easy
improvements, finding missing citations from resources, and using
tools like citation templates effectively. (I found it helped me to
improve articles quickly if I use both concise books written for
casual readers and large authoritative reference works.)
As far as I know, this time was, if rather small in scale, the first
occasion for people living around Tokyo to have an event purely
focused onto the collaboration between Wikimedians, in contrast to
more outreach-focused events in the past, like the Wikimedia
Conference Japan 2009 [2]. I am feeling that the Tokyo area is
finally filling one of the missing pieces of the puzzle in the
Wikimedia movement. Let us hope events like the Citation Party in
Kansai and this will continue to consolidate collaboration between
Wikimedians, ensuring continued growth of the movement in Japan.
Encouraged by this successful editathon, we are going to establish
"Wikimedian Society of Tokyo" (東京ウィキメディアン会), a local
Wikimedia user group for people around Tokyo. We are now rapidly
preparing our activity plans. Please stay tuned for more progress at
our (soon-to-be-official) website: http://tokyo.wikimedia.jp.

Hi guys,
So far, the Philippines will be organizing a national Wiki Loves Monuments competition, and according to Commons, South Korea may be organizing as well. Are there other Asian countries participating this year?
Also, for groups who are represented on the list but have not listed themselves on the table on Meta, please list yourselves at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Asia_Project. :)
Regards,
Josh

Hi,
yesterday in National Diet Library Kansai Branch, local Wikimedians in
Kansai and around had a sort of edit-a-thon,
focusing on citation of sources, which Wikimedians in Kansai
(WiKansai) collaborated to hold proudly.
Invitation was on the Japanese Wikipedia but no sitenotice was used.
We reserved a room at NDL as ordinary users, that is, they were not
affiliated to our event.
While it rained, and the library was situated in a remote area, six
editors joined. We hadn't expect casual users to join and we had been
right to some extent, but not every attendee were hyperactive, so
sharing experiences happened on several topics from art of prose
rethoric for articles to template know-hows. Some attendees including
me has visited NDL Kansai Branch first ever, so it was beneficial for
us to share knowledge tp ise tjeor facilities. I could make time only
for two hours because of private affairs but could make two articles
on the Japanese Wikiquote to full source-cited. All other attendees
seem to be content with their own work of the day. After the Citation
Party, we had a dinner together and exchanged thought and opinions
mainly on the Japanese Wikipedia.
We agreed on that the event of the day was fruitful and that we'd love
to host a similar event hopefully near future. There would be a lot of
points to improve, so your input will be appreciated.
Cheers,

Subject: Invitation: RecentChangesCamp 2012 in Australia
Dear Tanvir and Wikimedia Bangladesh,
I would like to invite you and the board members of Wikimedia Bangladesh to
attend RecentChangesCamp 2012 in Canberra. Details are available at
http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/University_of_Canberra/RCC2012 . The event
is not strictly a Wikimedia Australia event, and is more of a general wiki
event based on American and Canadian hosted RecentChangesCamps. Details
about those can be found at http://recentchangescamp.org/wiki/Main_Page .
As a chapter, we are unable to provide funding for you to participate.
(We may be able to provide small grants to offset some costs, such as
helping to cover the cost of a visa.) We would be happy to support any WMF
Participation grants that your board members may submit in order to attend.
I believe it would be beneficial for Wikimedia Bangladesh for several
reasons. First, it would be an opportunity to interact with several people
from the WMF community outside your country. Both our countries often have
to deal with issues that are similar like rural populations, limited access
to certain resources, travel requirements hindering possible expansion, and
being a long distance from the USA and the actual foundation. Beyond that,
it would help strengthen ties between Australia and another country in
Asia, and give us an opportunity to interact more and work on projects
together. Australia is also home to a large population of university
students from your region. There will likely be several Australian
academics in attendance who may be interested in the work being done with
wikis in your country. In addition, attending the conference would give
you an idea as to how this sort of event is run. It is done at low cost,
at low stress to the organisers, and takes little planning. It is also
extremely adaptable to local conditions. For an organisation that is just
getting underway, learning about the format may be useful for doing work
back at home.
If you came, you'd be expected to participate and propose a session.
Everyone who comes is basically a presenter. This is important. Your
participation would be documented on Wiki. We should also be able to
record some sessions if you needed that. :)
Sincerely,
Laura Hale

Hi guys,
The 2012 Wiki Loves Monuments competition will become global next year, and I'd like to ask how many countries in Asia intend to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments. During Wikimania last August, a pan-Asian Wiki Loves Monuments-style contest was proposed as a common project of the Asian communities, and with the global competition, I think we can focus our efforts on the global competition instead. However, we can have something like an "Asia's Best Picture" award or something like that.
Wikimedia Philippines had expressed interest in organizing a local Wiki Loves Monuments competition next year during GLAMcamp Amsterdam, and I hope other Asian chapters and communities will likewise be interested in doing the same thing. Information on next year's competition may be found at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012.

Josh

Hello all,
I got up just now (and here it's over the noon) and hungry so briefly
(thus not to other public lists)
Liam gave two talks in Yokohama (Tokyo he'd mentioned though) and in
Kyoto. I heard the former had been well done,
and I myself attended the latter it was great. Liam talks rather
slowly compared with his normal speed and it worked.
Regretfully we at Kyoto got not so many GLAM people but Liam seemed to
give a good impression to those who attended.
They discussed their concerns on GLAMWIKI and possible scenarios
applied on their own case,
which we the local should pour water and take care.
I wish Liam got the right train and arrived Seoul safely (he should
have departed in 7am or so)
and a happy Wikimedia week to the South Korean community best wishes.
Cheers,

Hi guys,
Do we have people on this list from all the proposed Asian chapters? I know we have some, but I don't know if we have everyone. I wanted to follow up on how you guys are doing in establishing your chapters, and what we can do to help.
Thanks,
Josh
