I've been adding navigation aids to the wikibook on OpenSSH and notice
that a new category has been added to many of the pages. I'm not sure
where it comes from or how to remove it. It is "OpenSSH/Cookbook" as
seen here for example at the bottom of the page:
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSSH/Cookbook/Remote_Processes
Where is it coming from and how do I remove it?
I've already removed category information from the man navigation
template for the OpenSSH Wikibook:
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Template:OpenSSHTOC
Where else should I check?
Regards,
Lars
Are ISBNs granted for books hosted on wikibooks? Or are they limited to
static snapshots (editions).of a book as it was at a particular point in
time?
Regards,
Lars
The on-demand PDF version of the wikibooks generates references without
showing any embedded URLs. Currently it is only embedded as a
hyperlink. It would be very helpful for the PDF to contain the URL
itself in addition to being a hyperlink.
So if I have the following reference:
<ref name="Hansteen_PF">{{cite web |url=http://home.nuug.no/~peter/pf/
|title=Firewalling with PF |author=Peter N M Hansteen |year=2011}}</ref>
It renders like this in PDF:
1. Peter N M Hansteen (2011). "Firewalling with PF"
What would be much more useful would be for it to show something like
this instead:
1. Peter N M Hansteen (2011). "Firewalling with PF"
http:///home.nuug.no/~peter/pf/
such that the URL is also visible.
Where should I file a request for such a wishlist item or bug report?
Or is that something already possible and I just need to give the right
parameters?
Regards,
Lars
I see on the collection management page that there is the option to
download as text or PDF
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Special:Book
Specifically it says
"To download your collection choose a format and click the button.
e-book (PDF, ocg latex renderer)
Word processor (plain text)"
Where can I find the option to download as OpenDocument Format or LaTeX?
Regards,
Lars

Hi everyone,
I was wondering: does anyone on this list have comments on the suitability of the following book proposal for Wikibooks?
All feedback is welcome. I have also posted a request to the English Wikibooks reading room <https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikibooks:Reading_room/Projects#Book_proposal…> and have already received some nice feedback via the (closed) Wikimedia cultural-partners mailing list.
I’m starting to work on a book about digital arts in the Netherlands in the 20th Century. And I’d like to do this under free licenses and with a transparent editorial process as much as possible.
Also, I’d like to make sure that the gathered knowledge for the book becomes readily available for re-use on Wikimedia projects and beyond.
The topic is not very well-known or published yet, so quite a bit of the material will be original research.
It’s an independent publication, no institutional liaisons. I’m seriously considering using Wikibooks as a platform, and have created a draft project page here: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/User:Spinster/Dutch_Digital_Arts <https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/User:Spinster/Dutch_Digital_Arts>
Before moving this to mainspace on Wikibooks, I’d like to be sure that this fits within the scope of English Wikibooks and that the community there is OK with it.
I have a gist that the main objections to this book would be
1. that it will consist too much of original research - this will be partly necessary as described above...
2. that it will mainly be written by a team of paid editors (financed via Dutch public funding)
The book will be about art, but we intend to write as neutrally as possible. Of course the selection of content itself is subjective!
To tackle 2.: I’ll take full responsibility and will be accountable as the official editor in chief, doing this as a long-time Wikimedian in good standing (since 2003) with a year of experience as a Wikipedian in Residence <https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Expedities> (no problems experienced there whatsoever) and a lot of experience in running projects and edit-a-thons with GLAMs, including warning them about COI issues. I trust myself and my colleague editors and intend to be as transparent and accountable as possible.
Any input is extremely welcome :-)
Thanks! Sandra (User:Spinster)
Your code modifications for http://wikitolearn.org/ are interesting. I'm
pretty sure that KDE policies don't force you to fork MediaWiki
extensions locally, so your patches are definitely welcome upstream.
I'm not sure what you mean with your point about <dmath> being rejected
by the community; perhaps you refer to some performance decision made by
WMF. If your modifications to Math are incompatible with some decision
of the maintainers, you can ask a different repository on gerrit or
another branch on the same repository, so that non-WMF users can use
your code.
As for your comments on chapters and drafts, I don't see anything
incompatible with how Wikibooks and Wikiversity work. If you have a
solution for what we call "book management" i.e.
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T17071 (worked on by Raylton and
others with
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GSoC_Mediawiki_Book_Experience
), that's especially interesting.
To reach the Wikibooks and Wikiversity community, the best way is to use
a medium that can involve their active editors, such as their mailing
lists (cc'ed here) or wikis.

Still a couple days available to offer yourself as Wikimania
scholarships committee member, or as ambassador for your community.

Oggetto: [Wikimania-l] Invitation to Wikimania 2016 Scholarship Committee
Data: Sun, 1 Nov 2015 21:11:05 +0000 (UTC)
Dear Wikimaniacs,
we are now calling for a scholarship review committee.
This year, we additionally want a scholarship ambassador for each major
geography or language, including a representative from each entity which
pays for additional scholarships; the ambassadors will be committee
observers.
The scholarship review committee is an important and diverse group of
volunteers who help to run the scholarship program in accordance with
the pillars
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars> of
this Wikimania. We encourage people from all Wikimedia wikis to apply
for this position so that the committee can handle applications in many
different languages.
The main duties of the committee members prior to Wikimania 2016 are:
* Participation in periodic online meetings with scholarships program
manager and other committee members.
* Review and edit communications material (e.g. Scholarship wiki,
application questions).
* Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.
* Assurance of due consideration and speedy response time to Wikimania
scholarship applications in multiple languages.
* Work with the local team.
For further information please visit m:Wikimania/Scholarships/Tasks
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania/Scholarships/Tasks> (the
committee will also be polishing this page).
We are looking for Wikimedians from all over the world, who are:
* fluent in written English and have good communication skills, or can
name local community member(s)/ambassadors who help them with
English translations.
* discreet and able to handle confidential applicant information, and
objectively assess candidates.
* willing to review scholarship applications in late 2015/early 2016.
* having either or both:
o previously attended Wikimania.
o strong knowledge of the cross-project Wikimedia community.
You will be working remotely. While we hope that scholarship review
committee members will enjoy Wikimania 2016 by giving significant input
to it, the local team cannot guarantee financial support for the
committee members' travel expenses since scholarship review committee
members may not apply for a scholarship themselves.
If you're interested in serving on the scholarship reviewing committee
and/or as scholarship ambassador, *please send us an email at
domande.wikimania(a)wikimedia.it*. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to contact us.
Deadline to apply is *Sunday, November 15, 2015*. The local team will
contact all candidates and publish the list of scholarship committee
members right afterwards. Please help with translations on
wm2016:Scholarship committee
<https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarship_committee>.
Proposed timeline
* Nov 1–Nov 15: Call for Scholarship Committee
* Nov 16–Dec 6: Preparations of the Scholarship Committee
* Dec 6–Jan 9: Submission time
Thanks,
Federico Leva
