Hi
With the multiplication of ZIM files and ZIM editors we need ways to
build overviews.
Without the metadatas they are not easy way to build these overviews
(You have to do it by hand every time).
This is waht I learned by coding the content manager of Kiwix which
works now.
So I think, having ZIM files with metadatas is essential, maybe even
more.
I think we have to push the usage of these metadatas (title,
description, creation date, creator, favicon, language) and I see 3
approaches:
(1) Make these informations mandatory
(2) Make a recommendation but nothing blocking
(3) Do nothing and be optimistic
What would be your preferred approach?

on *tuesday, 2011-08-02*, withing the *wikimania preconference *program,
there will be a *global south strategy workshop*. the topics worked on
should be in *three areas*:
* (1) contents
* just to give ideas, topics may include (rare) languages, citing
references in oral cultures, which wikimedia projects work
best, etc.
* (2) organizational development
* the discussion here might center around crowdsourcing in such
environments, which parties to involve first, a comparison how other
next generation internet companies like facebook gain users, etc.
* (3) access, which is the technical / developer part
* topics include software needs to better support wikimedia projects
given the connectivity restrictions which may exist, especially mobile
and offline solutions, software supporting distributing contents via
mesh networks, etc. depending on the preferences and number of
participants this part will be in conjunction with the wikimedia
offline developers workshop,

feel free to register here:

we would be glad if you could add topics of special interest to be
discussed as well.

Hello everyone!
I am Arunesh Mathur, an undergraduate student studying
in NITK, Surathkal in India. I have started making a port of the ZIM Reader
in Java, so that people interested in making offline Wikipedia readers can
leverage it, especially those who are looking to build for Android and J2ME.
I'll make the first commit soon, which has the basic functions needed. There
is still a long way to go to make it full fledged.
I am generally a little busy, so I work on this in my
free time. However, if you feel you need this to be done faster, just shoot
an email and I'll try my best to speed things up! (no promises though).
I hope this goes a long way in making ZIM more popular!
Thanks,
- Arunesh Mathur

Dear all,
some of you might have noticed or read it already on IRC or in my last
mail here on the list:
* there is a Java ZIM implementation to come
* there is now a Java LZMA2 implementation which was needed to make ZIM
on Java available
These days I have set up a system account on our server for Arunesh
Mathur (gremmachook). Tommi prepared a SVN directory for him and his code:
http://svn.openzim.org/viewvc.cgi/trunk/zimreader-java/
Arunesh is a student from India, interested in making the mobile version
of Wikipedia available on J2ME devices (eg. old mobile phones).
He will introduce himself to the list.
Arunesh, welcome on board!
