[openZIM dev-l] Postgresql help in creating ZIM files

Hello, everyone. As Manuel mentioned some time ago, I'm from Wikimedia Israel, and we're interested in trying the OpenZIM tools for a static version of the Hebrew Wikipedia we are working on, for inclusion in the Israeli government's One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. So far, I've been able to compile and run all the tools, but am having some trouble creating ZIM files: I've dumped a locally-loaded Mediawiki installation to HTML using these instructions <http://openzim.org/Wiki2html>, but when I try to run the builZimFileFromDirectory.pl script, I get silly postgresql errors about failing to connect using "kiwix" user. I should probably create a user, or a database, or both, but I've never used postgresql (I use mysql), and despite trying some combinations of commands to create a 'kiwix' user, with and without a password, couldn't get the DBI::connect call to succeed. I am sure you are all familiar with postgresql and can give me a quick pointer on how to proceed. I'm using a modern unstable Debian box, with a default packager-supplied installation of postgresql and the related Perl DBD module. Thanks in advance, Asaf Bartov -- Asaf Bartov <asaf(a)forum2.org>

Dear Friends! LinuxTag will take place on June 24th to 27th. As I have informed you earlier on this list we have successfully applied for a booth there. Now we have to plan our attendance there. Please see our planning page: http://openzim.org/LinuxTag_2009 Put yourself on the list, indicating when you plan to be there. I will have to order exhibitor tickets in advance for you and organise accommodation. Please also state if you agree with sharing a room or if you want to have a single room. I will try to book at Sunflower Hostel which is quite nice and cheap (near S Wahrschauer Strasse / Ostbahnhof). But we will have to book asap as the rooms might already be occupied (remember: A lot of young people are getting to Berlin during LinuxTag, looking for cheap accommodation). If you want to bring something for the booth (notebook, something to show...) please list it in the Material List and help us defining contents we want to see on our posters and Flyers. Also give your vote if we should get T-Shirts or not. Tommi Ok, the situation is more or less the same on my side: * I have released the first betat of Kiwix 0.8 yesterday : http://tmp.kiwix.org/bin/kiwix-0.8-beta1+xulrunner.tar.bz2 * A new optimized released of the ZIM file in english : http://tmp.kiwix.org/zim/wikipedia_en_wp1_0.7_30000+_05_2009_alpha6.zim This is not perfect... but should be functionnal and without big bug. For this reason, I think these releases are the one for the LinuxTag DVD (if we have enough place for the ZIM). Questions: * What is the deadline for the ISO? * Where is the architecture of the DVD? * Do we have to upload something ? where? Regards Emmanuel

[openZIM dev-l] [NEW ZIM] ~30.000 articles from Wikipedia in Spanish

Dear ZIM Freaks, I have released yesterday the first Kiwix selected collection of articles issued from the Wikipedia in spanish: http://tmp.kiwix.org/zim/wikipedia_es_kiwix_30000+_05_2009_alpha1.zim Infos: * ~ 30.000 articles * ~1.4 GB * All pictures as thumbnails * All featured articles and good articles and other articles are selected with my selection script. * First ZIM realised with an optim. which allows to only have one exemplar of each picture (~8% weight gain) This file being pretty light... the next alpha version will be done with at least twice more articles. I do not know how much interest you have for such "alpha release mail info"... but I think people, which are not necessarily interested in the dev, may want to be kept update about new ZIM files. We should maybe have a place to make such infos more public. An Atom/RSS feed would be great in my opinion to do that... but I do not have any proposition now about how to achieve that (blog soft ? planet ? Mediawiki ?) Feedback are like always Welcome. Hallo Manuel, In December, I have get two things from Linterweb: * Code of the ZIM access part for Kiwix * Patched libzeno. I have take a look to the first thing, but abandon the code and rewrited it fully (In fact I rewrited fully Kiwix). For the second part, Tommi posted a pretty argumented email weeks ago: https://intern.openzim.org/pipermail/dev-l/2009-April/000022.html About SVN access, my opinion is not as important as Tommi's one, but I would prefer that only people which have already proposed a few quality patches get access to the SVN... Dear Federico, you have here the contact for the project openZIM. The main contact is Manuel Schneider (manuel.schneider(a)wikimedia.ch) and the group of developers can be contacted with the address (dev-l(a)openzim.org). Manuel can clarify you the status of the project. Federico Leva is member and treasurer of the board of Wikimedia Italia. Wikimedia Italia is looking for a new solution for the CD of offline edition of it.wikipedia and would have a look in OpenZIM to investigate if this solution can match the requirements of Italian board. Wikimedia Italia seems to be interested also to support the project like Wikimedia CH is doing. I have received from Manuel also the notification that some tests are not in progress due to the overload of work, but I think that Federico could help you to found some testers.
