thanks for replying. With the following link as an example, I can get the
information I need for the width of images. However this refers to the
'real' size of the images, not the thumbnails (as they appear on an
article). Is there a way to get that size?

Sure, use a generator:
api.php?action=query&titles=Foo&generator=images&prop=imageinfo&iiprop=user|timestamp|size
(you can add more properties to iiprop if you want, see [1] for a
complete list)
