I am writing a Java program to extract the abstract of the wikipedia page
given the title of the wikipedia page. I have done some research and found
out that the abstract with be in rvsection=0
So for example if I want the abstract of 'Eiffel Tower" wiki page then I am
querying using the api in the following way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Eiffel…
and parse the XML data which we get and take the wikitext in the tag <rev
xml:space="preserve"> which represents the abstract of the wikipedia page.
But this wiki text also contains the infobox data which I do not need. I
would like to know if there is anyway in which I can remove the infobox data
and get only the wikitext related to the page's abstract Or if there is any
alternative method by which I can get the abstract of the page directly.

Hi everyone,
I'm involved in a project that would like to contact Wikipedia users via
email. I'm wondering whether I will need to get approval from the Bot
Approval Group (BAG) to run a script that will contact up to several
thousand emailable users via the Wikipedia API (to ask users to
participate in a research study.) I'm under the impression that 1)
since I can email users using the API without special privileges and 2)
I wouldn't be making any edits to the Wikipedia, I wouldn't need
approval from BAG. However, is the possibility that my emails will be
construed as spam and my script and account be blocked as a result?
Should I run this scenario by BAG before running my email script?

I joined this group today in the hope that I will get help with one API
issue I am having now. I am trying to get the number of user edits through
an AJAX call. I have tested this script in English Wikipedia and Malayalam
Wikipedia and it works there in all browsers. But this script is not working
in *Wikipedia Commons*.

The issue here is that xhr.responseText is returning me a blank value.

Hello,
As of r75906 [1] or one of its related revisions, the sessionkey
returned by action=upload is no longer an integer but a string. This
may affect you if your client library is written in a strongly,
statically typed language such as C or C#.
This revision is part of MediaWiki 1.17, which is tentatively slated
for deployment on Wikimedia in one or two weeks and for release a
month or so after that. Other breaking changes previously announced on
this list and not yet live on Wikimedia will also go live then.

It's wrong; first the pageid is not right ; sencond, the title is not
available in the wiki. The encoding and decoding both use "utf-8".
I have tried many methods, but I still can't solve it. Please give me a
help. I need that.
But when I access wiki in IE8.0 or firefox by "GET", the result is right. I
can't get where is wrong.

Yes, the name is unique, I discovered by reverse engineering that it is
merely "the MD5 transformation of the normalized TeX code". An intelligent
trick that, I guess, points directly on the png image without any need to
calculate it again: I presume that the name only is calculated, and, if the
png exists, it is uploaded! The "normalized TeX code", I guess, is the text
that you can see browsing the html code, into the "alt" attribute of the
image tag.
There are online free MD5 coders somewhere into the web, try the conversion
of alternate text.
Nothing of this is documented, I discovered it by myself; can be, I'm
absolutely wrong. :-)

Hi everyone,
Is it possible to retrieve (preferably via the MediaWiki API) an image
representing a mathematical formula given in the <math> tags that are
frequently encountered in Wikipedia articles ? It would be very helpful if
there were a way to "expand" these tags directly into images, similarly to
how the "templates=expand" string appended to the query string automatically
expands most of the templates in an article's wikitext; otherwise, a section
of the API or of the site (such as a Special page) that can make this
conversion for individual fragments would also be very helpful.

Is there a way for the API to tell me the English name of a language?
For example, using the code "fr", I'd like it to get "French" (not "Français").
This API call gives me a list of all the languages, with their local
names, but I would like their English names:
