Hi everyone, I just joint the list for editor engagement and I wish I can contribute from time to time with comments. I am a phD student from Barcelona doing research on User Engagement in Wikipedia. I've been studying different aspects from the encyclopedia for the past few years, cross-cultural analyis and community surveys, and also I've been involved in the Catalan community mainly (see my english Wikipedia profile<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Marcmiquel> ). I met Pau Giner and Amir Aharon and I am collaborating with them in the Universal Language Selector, providing extra usability testing with Eye Tracking technique. Currently, I am analyzing the results and preparing new studies. I posted a project for the IEG Grants in WMF called "Studying content interest and editor engagement factors with new editors<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Studying_content_interest_and_ed…>". I plan to understand how successful engagement occurs with new editors by means of an initial survey, qualitative work and few metrics to follow their progress. Feature updates in today's E3 deployment

Hey, Here's the lowdown on new work we deployed today on the Editor Engagement Experiments team. - GuidedTour is now added to frwiki, dewiki, bewiki, mkwiki, mediawiki.org, and outreachwiki. (I added announcements to the German and French Village Pumps.) - We enabled a 50/50 split test of the "getting started" tour on English Wikipedia (try it on any article with ?tour=gettingstarted at the end of the URL). We did this in order to measure the impact of the tour on the ability of new folks to complete their first edit, and find their way back to Special:GettingStarted if they want. - We deployed bug fixes and enhancements to PostEdit, including... - The popup displayed on a new tab after submit, bug 41805 - We made it easier to close, bug 41323 - We increased the time on screen from 2 to 3 seconds, bug 41512 - We made a fix to the way it looks in Monobook, bug 41240 -- Steven Walling https://wikimediafoundation.org/

Tour on making tours

Do people think it's possible to make a good tour on making tours? Currently, the test tour has essentially a redlink (or redbutton) for this. It would probably go like: 1. Enter such and such text (page name in MW namespace) into search box. 2. Create page (with a guider linking to the docs on the edit page). 3. Save It could also have part of the tour point them to editing an on-wiki page for tour content (getPageAsDescription). But I don't know if this is a good use of a tour or not. What do you think? Even if we make such a tour, we're thinking of dropping the link going there from the test tour. Matt Flaschen

Positive Notifications for Echo

Hi guys, We would be grateful for your advice on how to give more positive notifications to new users after their first edits. We're looking for notification ideas that could lead new editors towards a "happy path" to encourage further contributions. Many studies have shown that positive reinforcement plays an important role in increasing a user's productivity, and we would like to provide at least one or two good solutions to support that goal in the first release of Echo at the end of March. Here are some of the ideas which we have brainstormed to date, on our Echo feature requirements page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Echo/Feature_requirements#Positive_notificati… They include: * Useful edit notification This feature would add a 'Mark as useful' button in article history and/or diff pages, to invite experienced editors to mark edits they find useful, so they can send positive feedback to new editors. This could be done through a simple text link next to each edit (e.g. next to 'Undo'): 'Mark as useful' (or 'Useful' for short). When an editor clicks on that link, this notification would be sent to the new editor: 'Kaldari marked your edit as useful on Golden-crowned Sparrow. <View your edit>' * Huggle/Cluebot Notifications This feature would hook into third-party anti-vandalism tools like Huggle or ClueBot. Some of these tools could be adapted to provide an "approve of edit" button (Huggle already has such a feature), which could send a notification to the user who made the 'good' edit saying something like "this was good! Keep it up". * Contributions since your last edit Another feature we discussed is giving new users a bundled notification that '20 people have contributed to this page since your last edit'. While this type of activity is currently handled by the watchlist, this type of 'contributions' notification could have a positive impact in getting the new user to go back to a page they edited earlier (particularly if they don't yet feel motivated to use the watchlist). * Positive notifications for active new users We have already identified a number of positive notification ideas for active new users, which include: WikiLove, Page Link, or Page added to WikiProject. While these positive notifications are likely to motivate active new users, a challenge we face is how to give positive reinforcement to new editors immediately after their first few edits, before they become active enough to start new pages or be noticed for a WikiLove message. What do you think of these first ideas? None of them may be perfect in their current formulation, but with your help, we could be improve them to provide a practical solution that helps engage new users to participate more productively. With everyone's guidance, we can do better than only send them negative notifications when their edits are reverted (which is like a slap in the face) -- or sending them no notifications whatsoever after their first edits (which is what we are doing now).
