The only use case for a date picker I can think of is to set a date in an infobox or other template (such as cleanup templates, which like to know the month + year they were assigned).
Dates are used by core directly, for protection and block expiry dates (maybe more). I believe both durations (e.g. expires in 1 week) and expiry dates can be used (of course, it's two sides of the same coin), but in the log it clearly shows as a date (or a datetime to be exact).
