line-height in typography refresh

Hey guys, I just noticed that the line-heights we're using for content text are significantly different between the mobile typography refresh and the desktop typography refresh (VectorBeta). On mobile, we're now using 1.65 (this is a multiplier against font-size), while on desktop we're still using 1.5. Do we want to increase desktop to 1.65 as well (or use 1.6 as a compromise for both)? Any thoughts or opinions? My opinion is that we should use the same value for both and that it should probably be increased on desktop. Ryan Kaldari

Hi, thanks for letting us know about this project. I read through the design document, and there's definitely a lot of good ideas in there. I particularly agree with the list of questions the new site is supposed to answer, especially with regards to new, perhaps non-tech-savy visitors. I just mocked up a little live demo of what I could imagine the new homepage to look like with regards to the points discussed in the design document. Obviously you deal a lot more with the publishing side of things, while (historically) LGM has been focused on content-creation tools like Blender and GIMP.... But if there are Wikipedians who would be in the area, they might find LGM helpful for content-publishing stuff as well; in particular there are a lot of font and typography talks in recent years, thanks to CSS @font-face. For that matter, there is typically a lot of W3C and CC-licensing content in the mix as well. It's not just the app-development teams that make the event work; one of the best parts is getting the developers face-to-face time with the people using their stuff on a daily basis. Anyway, to the point: LGM this year is going to be April 2 to 5 in Leipzig, Germany. The site is at http://libregraphicsmeeting.org/2014/ .... If there are interested people nearby, we'd love to have them join us. Attendance is free; we try to underwrite travel costs for open source developers who attend (which we would also love to see Wikimedia take an interest in, of course :) -- tell your friends about the "donate" link!). But really I'm more interested in making sure we spread the word. If you use or build free creative-graphics software, there's something for you at LGM. Think there'd be interest? Static Header + Navigation Mod, Part 2

I think you'll be able to see it with http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/09/nyregion/christie-aide-tied-to-bridge-lan… This is quite interesting, since we've talked about similar redesigns involving elements they use here, such as... - Fully unifying the design across tablets, desktop, etc. - Fixed header - More use of dropdowns (like the "hamburger" menu from mobile) to collapse cluttered menus - Much tighter column width Other elements that I think are interesting and new to us are... - Putting the comments in a column alongside the content directly, when opened - Variable type sizing (see the cog icon for settings) - Content recommendations in a carousel at the top of the page - Navigating in a category of pages using left and right swiping. Strategy for rolling out new button styles

Now that the new button styles and classes are headed for core (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/103494/), we should decide on a rollout strategy for using the classes. Basically one of: 1. All at once (do https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/52169) 2. Continue piece by piece (e.g. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58296, wpSave, wpPreview, and wpDiff, which Tony Thomas just took). I'm inclined to #1, for horizontal consistency. Releasing new overlays to stable

Quick question. I noticed the story was changed slightly on Monday and now includes: "Decrease font size of Search Wikipedia search input text and headings on Nearby and Uploads from 18px to 16px" The text in the search input is bigger for a reason: Chrome on Android will zoom the whole page if the text is too small (too small for someone from Google I guess). We have to either keep the text size the way it is or disable zooming altogether to prevent this. So, what should we do? -- Juliusz

Easy reader, possibly useful for BetaFeatures

Hi! I was pointed, this morning, at a blog post [1] by Molly White, who has been an editor and technical contributor for some time now. She also did GSoC with us under Matt Walker. The post describes her system for making long talk pages easier to read. I think what she describes (and what she clarified for me when I asked) could easily be turned into another BetaFeatures experiement in Jon's VectorBeta extension. I'm looking for some thoughts on the concept, and maybe a volunteer to help out with the implementation. This would be particularly nice because we haven't, as yet, had a feature driven by volunteers that was a BetaFeatures thing. Another candidate I'm eyeing is Daniel Schwen's "favorite images" gadget, but that's a ways off IMO.
