I’ve made some fairly significant changes to the Static Header/Nav Mod prototype. You can play with it here:
http://unicorn.wmflabs.org/navmod/
Changes below. Note that most icons are placeholders.
=== New Changes ===
* Added "watch" button to button ribbon
* Shadow only appears on scrolling; disappears and turns to solid border when not moving.
* Added icons to article action elements
* Turned "more" action into a single pulldown
* Edit buttons now have secondary pull down for additional actions (edit source, insert image, etc.)
* Section edit link buttons are now standard "white" color until hover, where they turn blue.
* Targeted sections now have a slight border in addition to light color fill
* Removed border from Table of Contents
* Left aligned TOC header
* Search placeholder text is now replaced with article title on scroll
* All menu items now have icons (placeholders, mostly)
=== Bugfixes ===
* Fixed issue with hoverstate on H2 sections and striping (set background color to transparent rather than white)
* Fixed border radius issues with internal button ribbon

Hello everyone,
The MediaWiki homepage redesign project evolved and Design Document [1] is
being built.
This time we really need community involvement to help us decide which
improvements will be included and implemented in the new layout.
Thank you.
Best regards,

I think you'll be able to see it with
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/09/nyregion/christie-aide-tied-to-bridge-lan…
This is quite interesting, since we've talked about similar redesigns
involving elements they use here, such as...
- Fully unifying the design across tablets, desktop, etc.
- Fixed header
- More use of dropdowns (like the "hamburger" menu from mobile) to
collapse cluttered menus
- Much tighter column width
Other elements that I think are interesting and new to us are...
- Putting the comments in a column alongside the content directly, when
opened
- Variable type sizing (see the cog icon for settings)
- Content recommendations in a carousel at the top of the page
- Navigating in a category of pages using left and right swiping.
(Personally I think they will regret this one. People hate it so.)

Quick question. I noticed the story was changed slightly on Monday and
now includes:
"Decrease font size of Search Wikipedia search input text and headings
on Nearby and Uploads from 18px to 16px"
The text in the search input is bigger for a reason: Chrome on Android
will zoom the whole page if the text is too small (too small for someone
from Google I guess). We have to either keep the text size the way it is
or disable zooming altogether to prevent this. So, what should we do?

Hi everyone,
As Jared and I hinted at previously, we're about to launch a new iteration
on the "typography refresh" beta feature for Vector users.
You can find all the details about what we've changed at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Typography_refresh
Note: this won't go live to all wikis until this Thursday. You can see some
of the latest changes by using the beta on mediawiki.org, but we're
actually making a few final tweaks as we speak this afternoon. For a
comprehensive list of what will change, see the link I posted above.

Hi!
I was pointed, this morning, at a blog post [1] by Molly White, who has
been an editor and technical contributor for some time now. She also did
GSoC with us under Matt Walker.
The post describes her system for making long talk pages easier to read.
I think what she describes (and what she clarified for me when I asked)
could easily be turned into another BetaFeatures experiement in Jon's
VectorBeta extension. I'm looking for some thoughts on the concept, and
maybe a volunteer to help out with the implementation.
This would be particularly nice because we haven't, as yet, had a feature
driven by volunteers that was a BetaFeatures thing. Another candidate I'm
eyeing is Daniel Schwen's "favorite images" gadget, but that's a ways
off IMO.
