It will predominantly be something I, or the staff, use to share information that might not necessarily warrant use of a press release. That's a very vague way to describe it, but it represents one of the key considerations.
With comments it will also be a means for people to ask questions, generate discussion.
My biggest hope is to put good news from signpost etc on there. Signpost is great, but public/media might not be able to get to it quickly. This way they come to the WMF wiki and the blog should be very visible, easy to find.
I also see good reason to share other posts on the planet wikimedia page, or other people we're friendly with.

Quick question - who is to post to this blog? Will it be moderated selections from http://planet.wikimedia.org/ ?

Hi all - I know there have been challenges in getting this group going - and I thank Sean and the others for their patience.
Barring an IRC meeting (and I do want to participate there as well) I have a couple of quick questions.
How many do we have on this group list altogether? I should probably be able to find that out on the list page.
Secondly, we've now got the software in place for a wordpress blog at blog.wikimedia.org. It's in the freezer for now (i.e. not operating :) but not for long.
What I'm wondering is if we have any pros on this list, or if we could recruit someone, who could revamp the graphics template slightly to make it look a bit more wikimedia-esque. It will always be on a page all its own, but I'd at least like it to look/feel as much like the WMF wiki as possible.
Eventually we want to unleash some new mediawiki coding/functionality that will allow us to have blogging convention built right into the mediawiki system - so there'd be no transition. I suspect a huge number of media wiki users would treasure this option.
Any thoughts? Let's discuss...
