Please read http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard#New_... While you're at it, reading http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Be_civil might be a good idea before you call a long hard work on a functional system a "disaster". Best regards, Patrícia

Hi Patricia
Shure the previous comment was not so kind. But I wouldn't call the change user friendly either would you? To get the old comfort you now have to mess around with javascript.
And you're still asked for the "date of work" while almost any camera records this accurately in the metadata. User friendlyness would be: "Your camera says this picture was shot Nov 13th 2007 9:12. Is that correct? Yes/correct".

This only suffices if it's an unedited photograph direct from a digital camera which records this. Anything else still has to be manually input.

There may of course be image editors with bugs. But take Photoshop and Irfanview as two common editors that handle the data correctly. Anyway it was just a side note. We need to improve overall usability on Commons. Search is another construction site...

Unfortunately many scanners also embed this information, but it only applies to the date of digitization. I'm wary about assuming information embedded in the photo is correct, even if we ask the user to confirm.

Who can you trust then? The users brain? When I upload pictures taken more than one day ago I always watch the Metadata. I use a program to make folders for all images with the same date in the metadata.
The date of scanned files is a different problem. Many users currently enter the date of scanning manually because they don't have the original date. Technique can't solve this problem but it won't make it worse.

Why do we require the date of work, by the way? It strikes me as pointless for most pictures I upload.

Without having read the whole thread: Isn't there a gadget to turn the upload form off? If not it would be trivial to make.

To use the old upload form you can go directly to this link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=ex...
or
you can add the following script to your monobook.js:
var UploadForm_forcebasic = true;

People who don't like the new upload form can now disable it via the Gadgets tab in My preferences. Personally I would say that this form is a huge improvement :)

Not sure I understand what that means. Could you elaborate or rephrase?
