I found this image source: http://www.geograph.org.uk/ "The Geograph British Isles project aims to collect geographically representative photographs and information for every square kilometre of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and you can be part of it."
The interesting part is that a) They already have a lot of images b) They're free :-) (They talk about 'Creative Commons', but they seem to mean Cc-by-sa http://www.geograph.org.uk/faq.php#opensource They clearly reject ND)
The not-so-good part is that they only are 800x600

We have long had a template for this source: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Geograph
Please use that template. Sooner or later I'll get around to making a bot to generate location templates from the links back to their site.

If other people feel this way then commons has an illness.
Large images are better because they can be used in more contexts, but smaller images are not useless. An 800x600 image makes a perfectly fine postcard, and can be quite informative.
When you also include the fact that these images have good geographic diversity (within the UK) they really do represent something useful and unique.

sure more resoloution is always nice because it lets you do full page prints at A4 with dencent quality and to crop out individual items from the picture and get a reasonable resoloution result.
However for the primary use of commons which is as a repositry of media for illustrating articles in wikimedia projects 800x600 is more than enough even if those articles are being converted for print.
