Oh, wait... they taged it with "no known copyright restrictions". This seems to be nice, but please read: http://www.flickr.com/commons/usage/ 1. The copyright is in the public domain because it has expired; 2. The copyright was injected into the public domain for other reasons, such as failure to adhere to required formalities or conditions; 3. The institution owns the copyright but is not interested in exercising control; or 4. The institution has legal rights sufficient to authorize others to use the work without restrictions. My view is: 1. PD-Old 2. PD-because? 3. PD-not-really-PD ;) -- DANGER 4. CopyrightedFreeUse? More troublesome than chossing copyright tag is that "participating institutions" do not precise why there are "no known restrictions" and wash their hands with disclaimer: "IF YOU MAKE USE OF A PHOTO (...) Since I'm trying to find a solution for Flinfo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Flominator/Flinfo) which cannot choose things based on the picture. I think I will stick to PD-because with "Brooklyn Museum tagged it as no known copyright restrictions on Flickr". Any objections? Thanks for arging me into the right direction. I've just created {{PD-Flickr-Brooklyn-Museum}} which will be added by Flinfo from now on. Feel free to improve it. I missed part of the discussion, but PD-XYZ tags should only be used if XYZ is the author. We don't want any PD-NARA disasters again.

Seem like almost everyone who had something to say did :) Please move it somewhere else and tell me what I should change the template name in Flinfo to. Just a little remark: I lately had discussions with content providers who could perhaps release their content under a free licence, and I needed statistics on Commons. Templates and categories are really helpful there, because one can extract statistics from them through SQL queries. For instance, after some SQL work, I was able to count the ratio of articles on astronautics on Wikipedia in French that have PD-USGov illustrations. In contrast, textual explanations and other things that should be reviewed by a human do not help.

You will in that case want a separate non copyright tag. For example most {{PD-NARA}} tags should be replaced by {{PD-US}}{{NARA-image}} Bryan
