Everyone, i'd like to invite you to look at the current state of the Commons main page in a web browser with a 1024x768 resolution (according to recent reports, that's the most common resolution for around 25% of all internet users). Imagine you're a first-time visitor, who's never heard of Commons. If you're lazy you can also click on this link for a screenshot:
The main page is supposed to be a showcase on what a great collection of free media we have, right? Well, let's just look at what a first-time visitor encounters on the main page:
* A paragraph of text talking about a 'setup page' for the media of the day, for 'ease of translation' in something called 'Template:motd' and 'Template:potd'. Obviously, a first-time visitor won't have a clue about what all those terms mean and if they're important to him/her. * A link urging people to vote for the picture of the year, but that's only for 'eligible voters' (i am an eligible voter? how do i know?) * 'Welcome to Wikimedia Commons!'. Finally a warm word of welcome. Hooray! Apparently i can somehow be involved in this as well. * An enormous list of languages to choose from. Why would i want to view this page Suomi? I've got my browser set to my language and i'm coming from a certain country, right? And why can't this simply be in a dropdown list? * A picture, finally! Note that for all those 1024x768 users only the first 100 pixels or so of this picture are displayed, the rest of the picture disappears under the fold.
(scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll) * Aha! A box about how i can participate. Cool! A pity i had to scroll down all the way to the bottom to find that.
Now, i'm not trying to insult anyone, but i really think we should do a big redesign of the current main page, focusing on presenting what we've got and how we can invite new people to join the project. I'm not sure if the current grant from the Ford foundation also includes a homepage redesign, but that might be very helpful.
We did a little brainstorm during the multimedia usability meetup last november in Paris, and this was the result of a 90 minute 'How would you redesign Commons from scratch' session:
http://usability.wikimedia.org/wiki/Multimedia:Meeting_in_Paris/Notes/User_E...
Maybe we can take that as a starting point.
What do you think?

Like a lot of wiki front pages, the Commons one grew more than it was designed.
Time for some usability discussion and a front page competition?

Ok, I have condensed the overly long sitenotice and edited the landing pages it directs to. Then i have moved the huge language box to the bottom of the page. Those are quick fixes, which may need some finetuning (or reverts? ;-) )
Over all I do not think that we have a major problem with our mainpage. It just needs a more regular clean up. We should not forget to expire the donation notices Crystal guy / Tropenmuseum after reasonable time.

Yeah, our sitenotices are of little use to new comers. I have removed the sitenotices from [[Main Page]]. People which interact with commons will see them whenever they start browsing-
BTW, Dschwen moved the languages to the bottom, although I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
Maybe we should try to detect the language with javascript and offer the choice that we guess is right, with the others hidden under a scroll.

en.wikt hides the sitenotices to non-logged users, if I understand correctly (how?).

Does the page need any of the banners on the main page, loosing these would bring all the information up the page.
Could there be a Java sript box to cycle through a few images rather than just one.

Hi everyone, great to see that people are already starting up to clean up some of the worst areas. Thanks! I would remove the bullet points in the sitenotice though (i'm not an admin, so i don't have access to the sitenotice).
Detecting languages is not that easy, and afaik most websites tend to use some kind of combination of server and client side solutions. E.g, geo-ip on the server side for location (and a default language) and some client-side Javascript for exceptions.
I'll try to make some wireframes with a few elements i think we should have on the main page and share them with you here.

on the wider screen 1440x900 in firefox and IE it works fine
panoramas dont look too good especially ones like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ADresden-Fuerstenzug4.jpg which is basically a ribon maybe they could be given two slots

Not sure I like the visual effect (swooping away suddenly), but that may be just me - and, in any case, is endlessly tweakable.

Nice :) Although i guess maybe only one image instead of a few might be a bit easier on the eye. Is there any way i could edit the Javascript? I tried loading it from my personal userspace, but apparently MediaWiki doesn't allow that (only from the Mediawiki: space).
I've put a wireframe rendering of the Commons brainstorm sketches on the Usability wiki:

Maybe we can take that as a starting point for further discussions on the redesign.

Hi Hey,
he withJS-param only allows from a MediaWiki-namespace (because of security reasons, think XSS)
From our own userspace one can simply wrap a script within an if()- statement of (wgTitle == "Main Page") and the script will load when on the Main Page.
NB: Magnus' script already has this ifstatement anyway because the script should (ofcourse) only load on the Main Page, so copying as-is should work).
If you'd like to keep your vector.js (and it's history) clean, you could ofcourse also put it on another page (ie. Special:MyPage/ sandbox.js and importScript(User:You/sandbox.js); it like that in vector.js )

Hi Magnus,
I've checked it out with Web Inspector in Safari (ala Firebug in Firefox) and noticed it tries to load in (one or more times each loop) an "undefined" thing to url: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/ undefined . This sometimes causes a questionmark-image to appear in the flow. Not sure what causes this.
Tho I haven't read the script fully and extensively I noticed an additional API call is made to aquire the thumbnail paths. It could be that you need that API-call for some other information, if that's not the case you might be able to save that additional Ajax request by using something like this:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?f=Example.jpg&w=100

Hi Krinkle,
thanks for working on the script, I hope you'll keep helping out :-)
The reason I'm not using the direct thumb.php route is that it only accepts thumbnail width, not height. So, an image that is, say, 300x900, will be thumbnailed as 120x360, which is not really pretty in a row 120px high. The API call allows me to specify both maximum width and height, thus guaranteeing the thumbnail to fit into the row height. I guess the API call is a small price to pay.
Cheers, Magnus

Does this need some kind of push? Fabulous prizes?
Of those who had all those great ideas a couple of weeks ago, is there anything standing in your way?

I'm currently not at home. When I get there in about 4 hours and it isn't been done yet, I'll put the slider up on the frontpage. (whether or not as a trial)

Please don't. It it not polished enough for the frontpage yet. I appreciate a bold move, but the slider is not very pretty in its current form and it has bugs which make it awkward looking in Firefox (filenames instead of thumbs appearing). The title reads "Other featured content", other than ''what''? It is at the top of the page an looks out of place (not integrated into the page layout). The varying thumbnail heights make the row of images look erratic. Over all the slider is a neat idea, but it currently is not more than a hack. Best, Daniel
Great :-) So now we know what the status is. Thanks for your quick response.

BTW, Dschwen moved the languages to the bottom, although I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
Maybe we should try to detect the language with javascript and offer the choice that we guess is right, with the others hidden under a scroll.
Just added that functionality to Mediawiki:MainPages.js I'm sure it could use a bit more love. A link is added to the Welcome box for anonymous users if the browser language is recognized.

Cool. But you should also try splitting the browser language by the first dash. Also, Firefox seems to always return en-US for navigator.language, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubufox/+bug/353924

Now, i'm not trying to insult anyone, but i really think we should do a big redesign of the current main page, focusing on presenting what we've got and how we can invite new people to join the project.
I will join the "+1"s, and say I am extremely glad that you started to shake things about this issue.
I'm not sure if the current grant from the Ford foundation also includes a homepage redesign, but that might be very helpful.
Not really. We have very limited resources (both human and financial) so we have to focus on the most critical hinderances to participation (like the upload form).
However, I strongly support a community-driven redesign of the main page; creating an awesome upload wizard is useless if users can't find it because the path from the main page or the sidebar is confusing. A main page redesign shouldn't require heavy development, so it is something the community of Commons can lead.
I am not too fond of vote-based contests, because they might lead to a shiny page that appeals to Commons regulars (who are the ones actually voting), but doesn't cater for the needs of new or occasional users.
That said, I would support a main-page contest between designs that have been screened from a usability and user experience point of view before they can enter the contest. I'd be happy to help in an official capacity and provide feedback and advice, so that UX issues are resolved beforehand.

oh please not another main page contest, havent we been able to learn from the experience on en.wikipedia about main page redesigns
whats been happening at the moment is fantastic the page is evolving through simple unhindered co-operation let it continue and lets just be bold in making changes.

Not everyone is from en.wikipedia; but I'm sure you'll be happy to share your experience.
all up it consumed about 7 months of discussion see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:2008_main_page_redesign_proposal... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:2008_main_page_redesign_proposal... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:2008_main_page_redesign_proposal... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:2008_main_page_redesign_proposal...
the proposal first gained sufficient momentum to be formalised in July 2008 by December in had slowed down many people had lost interest or just drifted away over the holidays, in febraury the discussion just stopped the result was no change to the main page. Every week editors would drift through questions would be asked designs would be propogated and agreement would appear to ensue, then the designs would be reduced to a couple of choices a poll would commence then it would be follow by a poll as to how long the poll should run.after a couple of designs were chosen more question(mostly repeats) would be asks and those designs would be thrown away the process would be repeated.
There was straw polls, the was an RFC, there was a straw poll to have an RFC. What all the discussion came down was that people had their own wants and barrows to push, there was no clear objective, there was no leadership in the process, there much discussion about goals in fact they were changing so fast at one stage there was two ongoing discussion about goals. Basically if you want to stop a process reaching a result via consensus increase the number of people involve, the leason here is
- to keep the group small - have a clear objective - be bold
to quote user:Auburnpilot *After seven months of back-and-forth nonsense, the only proposed changes are so insignificant that bringing them to the attention of the wider community would be utterly pointless. It's a shame so many editors have already wasted their time on this thing, but keeping it going will not change the fact that it was a wasted effort. It was a nice idea in theory, but the execution killed it.
*Compar to that what has occured in the last week
- a couple of tweaks have been done - a suggestion was made, it been created, tested, tweaked -- it could be added now
except for those reading this list these changes would probably go unnoticed, because most people arent interested in the main page until a big deal is made of it. If you need a proccess to emulate for changing the main look at how the vector skin was done and how successful it introduction has been. There was no big voting process for the upload form changes, as such no drama.
