Hi everyone,
Tomorrow is the launch of the Wikimedia sound logo https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/ contest and we couldn’t be more excited. We'll be in session soon and accepting submissions.
On behalf of the organizing team and community liaisons, we are grateful to Commons community members and others who participated in the different phases of this project – from an initial concept exploration to a contest proposal – providing us with valuable guidance to help shape an open, global contest https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo. With so much expertise in international photography contests and visual logo searches in the movement, we are curious to learn how sound and audio production will play out for us, in harmony with our values.
This is just a heads up and a thank you note. More information to come. We'd love to welcome scores of submissions from around the world, so please help the contest call vibrate through your networks. And of course, submit one yourself. There are free and open source tools https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Sound_collaboration#Freely_licensed_(libre)_and_free_from_cost_(gratis) that can help us capture sound and create that unique sound logo for our movement. And you don't have to be pitch perfect, we'll be having an audio production drop-in clinic https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo#Music_Production_Drop-in_Clinic with our expert partner MassiveMusic on 29 September @ 15:00 UTC. We'd love to hear from you.
Ok, I think I have included enough sound-related puns in this email. Wishing you all well and once again, a heartfelt thank you.
On behalf of the sound logo team, Mehrdad

Do I see correctly that this website is promoting proprietary software, and adds insult to injury by calling them "free"? Quite appalling.
Federico
Hey there Federico,
We have shared different software suggestions all of which were recommended to us by sound engineers and audio producers. There are many musically-inclined community members that are already using these tools. You are most certainly not limited or required to use any of them to submit a sound logo.
Here are some of those free *gratis* and free *libre* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Sound_collaboration#Tools suggestions for you on meta. Hope this helps. During the May–June community conversations, we did demonstrations of Audacity, a wonderful free and open tool for audio production. You can watch the demonstration https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo#Community_conversations at your convenience.
Best, Mehrdad

The problem that Nemo raised is on https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/learn-more/#resources. It says "we have compiled a list of free resources you can use", and then links to non-free software (and some free ones to be fair).
Instead of having two separate lists, I would suggest the website link to the same wiki page you shared (which I fixed as well[1]).

Hi everyone,
Coming to you with an update.
We have been positively surprised with the volume of submissions received. As of September 21, we had 615 submissions from 94 countries. This is beyond anything we had imagined for this point of time. The entries are so diverse – from iconic 80's synthesizer sound effects to guitar and piano solos, all the brass instrumental fanfare of a Medieval affair, to abstract concepts created with voice and everyday objects. A dedicated team of community members has been screening all submissions as they come in; primarily for length, clear vandalism and any copyright issues.
We still have 3.5 weeks to go!!!! We know people are keen to listen in and with our community liaisons we decided to create compilations and share random batches of submissions. So without further ado, *lean back and listen in* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Submissions. We hope to regularly update this space with more batches of submissions.
Regards, The sound logo team
