Greetings. Tonight I setup a test version of a new Java based install-free player for our Ogg files.
Unlike the prior version it also supports Ogg/Theora Video. It also should improve compatibility with some Java implementations such as the old Microsoft JVM, and it should have working buffering which should make it useful for people with slow or intermittent links where the prior player was not.
I was planning on testing it out for a few days before taking it live, but the database feel over on toolserver which broke the old player anyways. The new player setup is a little more robust against database failures.
We still have a server problem which causes large media files to get stuck in the cache as zero byte files. If a particular file doesn't play for you, it's very likely that the file has been hit with this caching bug. This is a long standing bug, but we know the general cause now. It just is not fixed yet.
Here is a video example: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/commonsJOrbisPlayer2.php?path=Vib...
See, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Video for more. Unfortunately most do not yet have a template which provides a direct link to the player.
Here is an audio only example: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/commonsJOrbisPlayer.php?path=Scar...
Feedback is appreciated.

It worked perfectly on my system, although there was some considerable buffering delay. I rather enjoyed the orchestra, although my first choice for an example would have been a much shorter selection, like, say: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/commonsJOrbisPlayer.php?path=Blen der3D+BouncingSoftbodyBall.ogg

The image server (amane) is seriously overloaded. Our squids do not cache files over 600KBytes, so when amane suffers video and audio become mostly useless. I have solved this for the in-browser player by setting up a seperate squid which is only used by the in browser player. I've preloaded it with all of our videos and the most popular audio.
Performance should now be very good.

I wanted something with sound. :)
I've fully populated http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Video and every video has a play in browser link.
We only have about 600 videos on commons, so there is still plenty of room to grow. :)
A lot of our videos aren't even used in the projects, even though there are interesting and informative.. like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Pop-o-matic_video.ogg
Unfortunately, the player causes serious problems under Mac OS 10.4.8. Safari 2.0.4 either crashes when playing or reports that Java is unavailable (it's installed and enabled, so something's wrong there), while other browsers like Camino show other weird problems (where the Java player causes the entire window -- or large portions of it -- to appear as garbage, even after changing or closing tabs).
Is there any way to test the player on these systems?

Sounds like you just did. :)
[I'm replying in public just to avoid people thinking that it's known to be completely non-functional in OSX, which is not the case.]
I've had positive reports from other Mac users, although I believe they were in FireFox. Do you know what Java virtual machine your browser is using? Behavior within a single JVM is usually fairly consistent.
Do the videos at metavid work for you? http://metavid.ucsc.edu/overlay/video_player/webview?stream_name=house_proce...

The earlier vibraphone video worked fine for me on our G4 earlier on Safari (latest Mac OS 10.4, latest Java). Are you using a PowerPC or Intel Mac?

When I sent my first reply I was at home; I'm now uni wireless, so can't really test any more until I get home at some point tonight.
Here are the full details, for the sake of completeness:
Mac OS X 10.4.8 12" 1.33Ghz iBook G4, 768MB RAM
Camino 1.1beta Safari 2.0.4
I have the following versions of Java installed: 1.4.2, 1.3.1, 1.3, 1.4. I need to check which of these are being use by which browsers (I suspect that only 1.4.2 is being used), but I'm not sure how. I'll try to provide that information when I get home, if someone can suggest a way to track it down... Would screenshots be helpful, perchance?

Audio for this doesn't seem to be aligned for me. (Giant pop sound, then I watch the hand hit the button.) Using Java 2 1.5.0, FF 1.5.0.10, WinXP.

It happens to me too, *also with Videolan*. Does anyone hear it while the button is pressed?

It's the fault of the file. I suppose I should have picked a different example, but I'd checked that one while I had my sound off. :)
