Better for us, as in easier to maintain, definitely. But what do language communities prefer to use? I had an idea that they preferred to use SVGs with the text labels included. If you use a number version then you potentially have a very large caption. It is also just not as easy to comprehend as a text label one because you have to do two steps to match everything up rather than one.
So, I don't think we can count on convincing everyone to use numbered versions. Obviously it is better if people wait until an svg is stable before translating. :) But if they are only translating the text it should not even be *too* hard to semi-automatically update the other ones... (she said hopefully)

Hm, I don't understand what you mean by this. Can you explain more?
I think in the future, maybe we could have all languages in a single file, and via some SVGHandler extension (??) be able to use syntax like [[image:foo.svg|lang=ru]] to display only the Russian text coded within the svg.
