Dear ones,
Where might I get or mirror a dump of Commons media files?
> It seems worth mentioning on the front page of
https://dumps.wikimedia.org/
> It looks like the compressed XML of the ~50M description pages is ~25GB.
> It looks like wiki-team set up a dump script that posted monthly dumps to
the internet archive; in 2013 it stopped include the month+year in the
title; in 2016 it stopped altogether.

Dear Wikimedians,
The Community Resources team is reviewing its current grants programs
(Annual Plan Grants, Simple Annual Plan Grants, Project Grants, and Rapid
Grants) to ensure we are aligning with the strategic direction, with a
focus on equity and building a thriving movement. The redesign process will
take into consideration the Movement Strategy recommendations and
discussions around the recommendations. It will integrate direct feedback
from applicants and grantees that we have received over the past five
years. It will also continue to seek feedback from community members as it
is developed.
We want to move towards implementing and learning new models for grant
programs that will feed into the broader resource allocation discussion of
the Global Council.
In this redesign process, we are examining:
-
Our role as a team to support communities and the movement
-
Our processes: applications, reporting, metrics, and participatory
decision-making processes and their alignment with equity
-
Our programs and understanding which are the needs we are addressing,
and what elements are missing to achieve the strategic direction.
We invite all of you to join us on this journey. On the Meta-Wiki page [1],
there is an overview and timeline for the grants redesign process. We will
host office hours for multiple time zones in January 2021 to answer any
questions about the redesign process [2].
In February 2021, we will post a proposal for the new grants strategy. We
will invite you to review the proposed ideas. You will be able to provide
feedback on proposed grant programs on-wiki and through other channels.
Information about participating will be shared on the Meta-Wiki page [1].
When the feedback period is over, the Community Resources team will review
all community input and make final adjustments to complete the redesign. In
March 2021, the Community Resources team will review and incorporate
suggested changes and send a final proposal for endorsement and approval by
the leadership of the Wikimedia Foundation. Working together with you is
essential so that together we create grant programs that are useful and
address real needs for our communities. We look forward to engaging in this
next step and to hearing your ideas.
On behalf of the Community Resources team,
Best regards,
Rupika

Hello Everyone!
Wiki Loves Folklore 2021 is an international photography contest organized
on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage
from different regions, including folk festivals, folk dances, folk music,
folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and
tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional
song and dance, folk plays, games, folk religion, mythology and many more.
In the last two years, we have been able to document around 27000 media
from over 125+ countries. In 2019, we had a successful international
edition that ran from 1-28 Feb 2019 where we got 7121 images from 1700+
participants from over 120 countries in the theme pertaining to the
festivals and ceremonies from different parts of the world. In 2020, the
competition elicited 19,052 image submissions, 144 videos, and 13 audio
files, the campaign documented folk culture of over 125 countries around
the globe. Over 1496 photographers took part and around 20 affiliates
collaborated in the project.
How to contribute?
Starting 1 February to 28 February, interested Wikipedians, Wikimedians,
folks, Glam advocates and Cultural enthusiasts can help bridge the
knowledge gap on documentation on the theme folklore. If you are interested
in participating in the photography campaign, start photographing and
collecting media of your local culture and get ready for the photo campaign
happening on Commons. For more information check our project page.
Who can Participate?
This is open to all open evangelists with interest to the aforementioned.

There is still time to take the quick Media Search survey [1] on which
search experience you prefer using on Commons, Special:Search or
Special:MediaSearch. The survey is only one question–which search do you
prefer–and will just take a moment to fill out if you're interested. Thanks
for your time, I plan to end the survey soon and your response is
appreciated.
