Hi all,
I am attempting to set up a Wikivoyage Labs prototyping wiki, see https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nova_Resource:Wikivoyage, which is a WMF resource we can avail ourselves of. I got that far by dint of perseverance over the past couple days. But now I'm up against the hard part of cloning an instance of en.Wikivoyage to do prototyping on. I just don't know how to do it.
Does anyone here know how to do this and want to help?
The Wikivoyage Labs prototyping wiki I am trying to create (doesn't exist yet) would be for all wikivoyagers to use for hacking up pages and experimenting. We could install extensions and basically do whatever we want that is for the purpose of experimenting with and developing Wikivoyage's look and features. For example, the Main Page there could be hacked up and processed through the Mobile page creator without messing with our production wiki. The whole wiki would be a sandbox.
I'd like to see experimental instances of all the language versions of WV there.
The experiment I personally have in mind to do first, once we have this set up, is to install the Universal Language Selector extension[1] and see if I can configure it as a way to switch nicely between the various language versions of WV.

My notes to myself about this are on my Labs userpage: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Rogerhc
I'd love your help,
Roger :-)
What are your blockers? Is it about getting a Mediawiki installed on the labs instance or is that already done and it is about wanting to import wikivoyage data ?

Both. All I have so far is the Labs project, Wikivoyage. So next step in cloning an en.Wikivoyage instance there is what? On Apr 18, 2013 2:12 PM, "Daniel Zahn" dzahn@wikimedia.org wrote:

actually, what you want to do is already done :)
see this: http://en.wikivoyage.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page
You'll most likely want to join the existing "beta" project instead of trying to redo this again.

On #wikimedia-tech just now Ryan Lane told me, "if you need to make software changes, you'll need to make them in your project," and suggests: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Single_Node_MediaWiki
I may well need to change code in the Universal Language Selector extension to get it to do what I want. So I think Beta is actually not an option and I will need to, as Ryan says above, make them in my own project. Right?
I'll go read that help page Ryan pointed me to, now.
Roger
Roger,
yea, follow Ryan's suggestion then. I wasn't thinking about that difference between Beta and a standalone install when it comes to making changes.
