There will at least be two relevant events for Wikinewsies at or around Wikimania: * An open discussion about Wikinews and wikis in journalism on Saturday, 4:00-5:30 PM: http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikis_and_the_news * A whole mini-conference about citizen journalism on Monday: http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Journalism If you plan to attend, please add yourself to the list (registration is mandatory for the citizen journalism conference). News of Wikinews; Japanese Wikinews goes to Year 2.

Hello, Japanese Wikinews celebrated her first anniversary today on July 14. Her sitenotice says "日本語版ウィキニュースは1周年を迎えました。" (Japanese Wikinews comes to her first anniversary) # If you feel it as problematic as Qur'an, feel free to contact us. According statistics, there is 1071 pages in main namespace, 501 registered users and 9 admins including 2 bureaucrats. In my impression, all active contributors are registered and around 80 articles are submitted by month. As pointed out recently, her community is still small and need to further growth. An user Peka analyzed Erik Zachte's statistics and found some interesting points. - Among 500 registered user, only 3.2% of editors (= 4 people) did its 75% of edits in a year, additional 5% of editors (=6 people) made 11.8%. (aph: It would suggest her frequent editors are equal to the group of active admins. ). On the contrary 52% of editors made one or two edits. This group is the biggest in population and their edits shared 1% of all edits in this year . - In her early stage, till November, around 100 articles were submitted by month. Since last November the average number of submitted articles per month decreased to around 50-80 (avg. 64); after then, no standing change has occurred and the number of articles has been constantly growing. - Among articles by country, articles concerning Japan are biggest in number (679 art.). Articles on USA(86 art.) and China (PRC) (40 art.) are next. By region, next to Japan alone (on Japanese Wikinews, Japan is treated not as country but also region due to its gravity of interest), Asia except Japan & Middle East (191 art), Europe (141 art) and North America (101 art) seems editors' interest. Oceania including Australia and South America are in opposition of those "favorites" regions. Unlike to English versions, Middle East is not frequently focused - it covered less frequently than Africa. In Japan, Tokyo is focused most among 47 prefectures, next Osaka and Okinawa are covered. It is remarkable Akita prefecture is the 5th most focused, which is usually considered not so a heavily press interest, and it is easily understandable one of most active editors is living in that prefecture. ;) Details are found at: http://ja.wikinews.org/wiki/%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A3%E3%82%AD%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E… It will be a challenge for Japanese Wikinews to get more people involved, both inactive editors and newcomers. For involving the latter group, a new project has recently started on meta how to introduce Wikipedia editors who are interested in contributing breaking news to Wikinews editing. Another challenge would be printable version though, there is no plan of periodical issuing except a proposal of "year book". Hi, About some 8 months ago I started with an attempt to bring news with a newsletter "Wikizine". I try to bring different types of news like "Foundation", "Community", "Media" , "Technical news" and so. So I bring the news for the Wikimedia family like Wikinews is bringing news to the world. I am writing this fist of all to ask for your cooperation with this newsletter. To be able to report news first the news must be known. "The Water cooler" is one of the pages I look for to find news about Wikinews. But it can be that I do not notice something. Or, more likely, it is not there to find. And especially if it is going on other Wikinews language editions I will not find out about it. So I request that if there is news about your project, especially for the non-English editions, that you would report the news to me, to Wikizine. Let the readers of Wikizine know there is more then Wikipedia. A way to make it more likely that someone will think about Wikizine is to put a banner on your userpage or even better on a public page like the "Water Cooler", also for the non-English Wikinews versions.; http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikizine/banners On the other side I try to get the news downhill to as most of the projects and especially languages as possible. Because of piratical reasons Wikizine can only be in English. But it would be fantastic if people would be willing to translate the news and share it with there community. A total translation of Wikizine is great but also a lot of work. Maybe only translating the most relevant news can be enough for starting. You could work together across the different projects in the same languages. By cross-project cooperation the work of translation can be shared. I just changed the browse by section in the navagation bar to MessedRockers [[Wikinews:Browse]] from the traditional [[Wikinews:SectionMenu]]. I feel MessedRockers is more complete, and there's just to much stuff for one page. -- bawolff Caution: The mass of this product contains the energy equivalent of 85 million tons of TNT per net ounce of weight.

Wikinews licensing

Dear Holger Hartnig, In regards to your question sent to the Board of Trustees relating to Wikinews's licensure, "attributing to Wikinews" means that you have to credit the text of the article to Wikinews and link to the article. This is similar to the GNU Free Documentation License, only in this case, you only have to cite Wikinews instead of each contributor. The decision to use the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License was based on a Board vote, which was influenced by a vote at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikinews/Licensure_Poll, where the community decided on the CC-BY 2.5 license. Other options included the GFDL, the BSD License, the "Wikinews" license and the public domain. Sincerely, James Hare

Current CNN.com frontpage stories: * Yellowstone tourist dies in 500-foot fall * Elevator crushes child visiting his grandmother * Mid-air crash kills pilot before air show * Couple finds cat playing with 7-foot-long snake * 92-year-old jumps out of plane * World's most expensive lemon? And this is above the fold, i.e., these are the _top stories_ of the day. When people make fun of Wikinews' story selection, I often wonder if they reflect on the stories that are selected by the media they actually use. I hope we will be able to do a lot better than this in the long run. Erik

I don't know where these conversations will take place in the future, but at present they seem to be gathering in frequency and length on that list, and long-ranging decisions are being made over the next few months. Announcing... CommonsTicker

Hello, CommonsTicker is a special tool created by (commons:,meta:,:de:w:)User:Duesentrieb to allow for greater communication and transparency between the Commons and local projects (all projects, all languages) that use the Commons. When it is set up, a log page is created and a bot posts updates about any critical events that occur to any Commons images that are being used by that project. Critical events are: image replacement (a new version of an image being uploaded over the top of an existing one), an image being marked or unmarked with a deletion tag (including no source, etc), and an image being deleted. This allows local project users to immediately identify any images that have been nominated for deletion, giving them plenty of notice to take part in the deletion discussion, as well as checking that image replacements are not vandalism and removing any red links from deleted images. CommonsTicker is completely translatable (if you provide a translation). All it needs to be set up is a project admin to "sponsor" it through the early days.
