Wikinews articles are being copied to http://juiceenewsdaily, sometimes
with attribution and sometimes without. en:User:Chiacomo has been
communicating with the publisher of this site, attempting to encourage
him to correctly attribute and otherwise follow the CC-by licensure.
Today's article posting
(http://www.juiceenewsdaily.com/index.php/2006/01/18/al-qaeda-bomb-maker-rep…)
again failed to include either attribution or licensure.
After contacting Soufron, a member of the Wikimedia Foundation's legal
team, for advice, I sent the following message to the publisher of
juiceenewsdaily:
----
Hi! This is Amgine, and admin at Wikinews, a project of the Wikimedia
Foundation.
I have spoken with our legal team regarding the use by
juiceenewsdaily.com of the articles created on Wikinews. We really
appreciate our articles being reused, which is why they are copyright
but licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution
license. Those terms may be found at
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/legalcode (a synopsis is
available at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/)
We have noticed your site, juiceenewsdaily.com, is not currently in
compliance with this licensure, which requires that each article you
choose to reuse must include a direct attribution ("This article from
Wikinews" would suffice) and, as a redistributor, clearly stating the
article is licensed under the CC-by and its terms (which may be
satisfied by a link to the Creative Commons legal code, or a link back
to the original article on Wikinews.)
We're sure this is merely an oversight on your part, and that you would
not knowingly place your copyright statement on content which is legally
copyrighted by others. We're also aware that it may take some time to
correct this oversite, and are willing to allow 30 days for the content
to be corrected or removed from juiceenewsdaily.com.
Wishing you the best,
Amgine

Hopefully the letter will resolve the issue, but we'll be keeping an eye
on the site in the meantime (WN articles accounted for more than half
the articles on the site today.)

Hi,
an Arbitration Committee for the English Wikinews has been under
discussion since November 2005. There is wide agreement that it is
currently very difficult to enforce our policies like NPOV and
Wikiquette in borderline cases.
Due to a significant ongoing dispute, a proposal was recently made to
create a different system based on open voting. In the discussion, it
was generally agreed upon that an ArbCom is the lesser of two evils when
it comes to resolving disputes that cannot otherwise be addressed.
For this reason, after some discussion with Amgine (who formulated the
ArbCom policy), I have created
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Arbitration_Committee_elections_2006
to select the first 5 members of the committee (by broad consensus if
possible).
Please post comments and objections to the process on the talk page, and
to the general idea of an ArbCom on:
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews_talk:Arbitration_Committee
The process is largely modeled after the one of the English Wikipedia.
Jimbo, if you would like to be involved in finalizing or modifying the
appointments, please speak up. :-)
Best,
Erik
This looks fascinating. Wikinews should channel into this, and help out
(and even solicit content from / share content with them).

This is a neat project where any high school aged kid can become certified
as a journalist through online training and then publish on their site.
It isn't blog related, but it could be an interesting way to help youth
learn more about journalism.

There has been some discussion in the #wikinews channel about adding
two new mailing lists and I thought it would be wise (after advice
from Angela) to solicit some community comments on their creation.
I would like to create a new mailing list called WikinewsEN-print-l
(or something similar) in order to distribute a copy of the daily
print edition. This would be a low volume (one message per day) list.
This would permit subscribers to receive a copy of the daily print
edition without visiting the English Wikinews site.
Additionally, there have been some conversations about English
Wikinews issues that could be conducted via mailing list. For this
reason, I feel that a WikinewsEN-l list would be appropriate.
What are the community's thoughts on creating these new mailing lists?

Landon,
Thanks again for carrying Wikinews content. As I've said, the purpose
of our licensing our content under the free CC-BY license is to allow
easy reuse of that content.
The terms of the CC-BY license, however, do require that each story
copied from Wikinews include direct attribution -- a simple "This
story from Wikinews" with a link to the site (or ideally the original
story) would be most appropriate.
I imagine by now that someone else from Wikinews has written you, but
I thought I would write again as we had corresponded before.
We are very pleased that you have chosen to reuse Wikinews content,
but understand that it is important that the proper attribution be
provided.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about Wikinews or
reusing our content.
My best to you,
-Chiacomo

Hello,
Does anyone knows how to create an RSS feed like the EnWikinews has? We have
just set up and I belive that an RSS feed will help us bring more users.
The page we will like to be set as a RSS feed is
http://he.wikinews.org/wiki/תבנית:חדשות_חמות
thanks, Avichai
