Hi everybody!
I’ve created a page for the virtual editathon we were discussing to be tentatively held on Sun, Dec 15 from 10:30-12pm [1]. Our intention was to have an unstructured editathon where anybody would be welcome to join us and edit any article of their interest, but we’d select some articles and photos to work on related to the counties devastated by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. This is a very rough page — please feel free to edit it as much as you'd like!
To find photos we could work on, I’m also working through the list of photos submitted to WikiPixNC 2022 and writing down the county that each photo claims to be from [2], so we can focus on western NC photos first — help welcome! All the photos (as linked to from the “url” column) should have a little “County:” section in their description, so all you need to do is copy that into the spreadsheet.
We decided that for an editathon it would make sense to put out a Geonotice [3] instead of a Central Notice: this will only appear in the Watchlist page of signed-in Wikipedia editors, so it’s less annoying that a Central Notice, and should target editors rather than readers. I’ve started a discussion thread on the event talk page to come up with a nice, pithy Geonotice — please add your suggestions there [4]!
cheers, Gaurav

Thanks, Gaurav! And sorry to be so long in responding. (I somehow missed this message when you first sent it.)
I think the event page looks great! I just responded about the Geonotice text <[4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/NC/Virtual_Editathon_Dec.... Other thoughts welcome!
I'll try to have a go at adding some of the county names to your excellent spreadsheet, and will again encourage others to join in that effort!

Hi,
I went through and focused on identifying images in Western NC.
Here are the Western NC counties where we have some images to focus on:
Avery Buncombe Burke Catawba Haywood Jackson Macon McDowell Mitchell Rutherford Transylvania Watauga Yancey
Buncombe would probably be top priority in terms of impact and also number of photos.
I also asked in my Wiki Scholars class about the difference between Description and Caption. Description can long, and they are sometimes quite detailed. Caption should be short and to the point. Caption is what prepopulates when adding it to a page, and is also what is translated to other languages. So depending on the image and your priorities for it, you may want to focus on one or the other or both.
Yours,
Jennifer
