Todd Allen and I are headed to Germany April 19-22 to represent the Wikimedians of Colorado User Group
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedians_of_Colorado_User_Group
The conference page is at
Wikimedia Conference 2018 - Meta
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018
Do you all have any input? Is there anything in particular we should look for or bring up at the conference?
E.g. about the Wikimedia long-term strategic plan?
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction
--- Our strategic direction: Service and Equity ---
By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us.
We, the Wikimedia contributors, communities, and organizations, will advance our world by collecting knowledge that fully represents human diversity, and by building the services and structures that enable others to do the same.
We will carry on our mission of developing content as we have done in the past, and we will go further.
Knowledge as a service: To serve our users, we will become a platform that serves open knowledge to the world across interfaces and communities. We will build tools for allies and partners to organize and exchange free knowledge beyond Wikimedia. Our infrastructure will enable us and others to collect and use different forms of free, trusted knowledge.
Knowledge equity: As a social movement, we will focus our efforts on the knowledge and communities that have been left out by structures of power and privilege. We will welcome people from every background to build strong and diverse communities. We will break down the social, political, and technical barriers preventing people from accessing and contributing to free knowledge.

Or Movement Partnerships?
Or Capacity Building & Learning?
I'll be out-of-town starting tomorrow and this nealmcb(a)gmail.com address is the best way to reach me.
Thank you, and cheers,

A planning meeting tomorrow March 21 at 5:30 at Sanitas Brewery,
for the "Outdoor Women of Wikipedia" editathon event next Sunday,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boulder
sounds perfect to me, and it sounds like we have at least 4 who can make it.
Cheers,
Neal

Minor change...I put my name at the bottom. I would prefer different folks
go this time so we have wider exposure.
* Neal McBurnett
* Todd Allen (may be able to self-fund)
* Isarra Yos
* Spencer
* Gaurav(?)
* ...
* Abhay Natu
As far as bringing back stuff, we have a Movement Strategy to endorse (or
not) that was developed in the months following the conference. Now that we
have some activity on the list, I'll send out the details. I'll wait until
we sort out the participation list for this year.

Hey, all:
Apparently Wikimedians of Colorado User Group can send two people to the
Berlin Wikimedia Conference this year, and the deadline for registration
is tomorrow (15 January) at 16:00 localtime! Because we totally suck at
this, we need to figure out who to send probably... tonight? If anyone
is interested in actually sorting out what's needed that quickly, you
can likely just go, but we do need to coordinate that now.
So who all is interested? Again, this needs to happen with as much
immediacy as possible.
* We indeed are eligible, per
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018/Eligibility_Crite…
and as a group two thing they're still paying for it out of conference
budget, so that's not a concern for us
* Registration itself:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018/Registration_Info…
* I think if you're up for sorting this out as last minute as this, it's
probably good enough for

I went last time and it was great. I nominate myself as the last choice
(just so we don't lose a spot).
I encourage you all to go. It is great to meet like-minded people in person.

Yeah, without pharos, I think we all would have missed this, so props to
him for the constant reminders and forwards and all the help keeping
this group actually going.
And awesome, Neal. I'm interested as well, but if we can get someone
else (Todd? Other organisers?), I'd be happy to defer.

I would really like to go this time. My wife got very sick last time so I
couldn't do it, but well, I certainly would hope that doesn't happen again!

Hi all,
We are excited to announce that the application is open
<https://goo.gl/forms/dimatR4UKCjWSOwn1> for attending the Wikimedia
Diversity Conference 2017
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Diversity_Conference_2017>, 3-5
November in Stockholm, Sweden.
Please help share this with staff and volunteers who want to work together
and share strategies to support and promote diversity in the Wikimedia
movement.
There are (at least) four reasons to register:
-
Participate: All interested participants must register to show their
interest in attending the conference and that they qualify given the theme
of the conference.
-
Shape the program: The first section of the registration is about the
conference program and the questions are for interested participants to let
the organising team know what they wish to learn, share and the kind of
experience they have from working with diversity in Wikimedia. The
participants are the core of the conference.
-
Lead activities: Anyone who registers can indicate if they want to lead
activities during the conference, such as talks, discussions and/or
training. With this information, the organising team will approach
participants on how to engage in the conference and actively contribute to
shaping the program. There will not be a traditional separate proposal
submission process.
-
Apply for scholarship: The registration form also has a section for
scholarship
application
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Diversity_Conference_2017/Scholar…>
and participants who want to apply for scholarship 2 and 3 should do so by
20 August (they are mainly intended for volunteers).
We look forward to hosting these discussions on diversity and Wikimedia
impact in Stockholm.
Best Regards,
John

Hi everybody,
We just received the great news that the Wikimedia Diversity Conference
2017[1] has received the full grant from the Wikimedia Foundation's Event
Grants.[2] We look very much forward to hosting the conference and to
welcome you to Stockholm the 3-5 November 2017.
We now need your help in making it a success! We invite members from your
Wikimedia organization or user group to sign up as ambassadors for the
conference.[3] Ambassadors are champions of Diversity on Wikimedia and
volunteer to use that power to support the conference in several ways.
-
Support before the conference. Ambassadors help communicate to local
communities that the conference will happen and provide updates of the
planning process, such as when to register and how to apply for scholarship
and why submit a proposal. The other way is to provide constructive input
and ideas for the program and for the overall event. Ambassadors can also
organize discussions at other conferences taking place prior to the
Diversity conference.
-
Support during the conference. Ambassadors can also volunteer their
champion powers during the conference to support documentation and curation
of discussions and insights, facilitate the implementation of the program
with the facilitation team, support participants with helpful advice and
on-site information.
-
Support after the conference. Ambassadors help disseminate the knowledge
gained during the conference to their communities and to participate in
networks to continue working with Diversity.
Active participation as an ambassador will support a scholarship
application.
We would be grateful if you could forward this possibility to your
communities.
Furthermore, we are actively looking for more funding from sponsors, but we
do have limited opportunities to provide scholarships and only parts of the
travel costs for participants can currently be covered. If your Wikimedia
organization has the opportunity to provide a full or partial scholarship
for your volunteers or staff, please let us know. We would be happy to
highlight your involvement and support on the conference portal.[3]
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us!
We intend to send out the registration form at the end of next week.

Hi everybody,
Sorry for forgetting about this: the Wikimedians of Colorado User Group
Annual Report 2016 was due back in March! On the principle that it's
never too late etc., I've written a brief report up at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedians_of_Colorado_User_Group/Annual_R….
Please have a look, add any events I've forgotten about, any outcomes of
those meetups you think it'd be useful to mention, and anything else we
did group-wise last year. I'd particularly like any photographs anybody
took of group events that would look good on that page!
Have at it!
cheers,
Gaurav
