Hi folks,
I'm wondering if there would be interest in a WikiExpedition hike on Memorial Day weekend. The concept is that we'd do the hike and document/photograph it and the surrounding landmarks, vegetation, wildlife, and other notable elements. We could add this information to Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons, Wikispecies, and Wikimedia projects. Would anyone else be interested?

I like this idea! If I am in town, I'll join.
Best,
Mika

Pine, do you have any more specific idea in mind? Although I'm in generally good shape for an old guy, I actually have some physical issues that can affect walking more than many other activities (part of why I use a bicycle a lot). I would probably be up for this if it's within what I can do physically.

It could be a good opportunity to tie into this international campaign in May:

Though it looks like at least so far the U.S. is not a participating WLE country. And Memorial Day weekend will be awfully close to the end of the month to get photos up in time.

Pharos, perhaps we can discuss US participation in Wiki Loves Earth at the next USWC meeting!

Follow up: a total of 4 people have expressed interest. Let's plan on hiking the Evans Creek Preserve trail ( http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/evans-creek-preserve) on Monday, May 30th. Plan to meet at the trailhead at 12 PM. **We might change the date to Saturday or Sunday depending on the weather forecast for Monday**.
There's a video overview of the park from the City of Sammamish: http://media.sammamish.us/EvansCreekPreserve.mp4
I'm guessing that the hike will take 3-4 hours including time spent stopped on the trail as we take notes and photos. (Please bring cameras, notepads, pencils, etc!)
We'll probably have our regular monthly meetup later in the evening at 6PM. We can set aside an hour of that meeting for editing Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata, etc. regarding the preserve.
Cheers,
Pine

Will we be meeting at the new trailhead or the old one? There is something to be said for the old one (end with a descent instead of an ascent).

That's my understanding. Only space for 10 cars, though, and it will be a holiday. I, for one, have to do this by car because even then I'm likely going to be running late for my friend's birthday dinner. If there are others who want to carpool out from Seattle, let's be in touch about it. My girlfriend is probably coming, but we should have room for two or (in a pinch) three others.

Hi folks,
Friendly reminder about events on Monday, which is Memorial Day.
* There will be a Wikimedians hike at Evans Creek Preserve http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/evans-creek-preserve. We meet at the *old* trailhead at 12 PM. Please bring cameras and/or tools suitable for taking notes (smartphone, tablet, or pencil and paper notepad). The reports are that there is plenty of wildlife. (You might want to bring bear spray just in case we encounter a bear.) The current weather forecast is for partial sun in the afternoon. If you want to carpool from Seattle, please contact Joe (see below.)
* There will likely be a break between the hike and the evening meeting.
* At 6 PM, we will have our monthly meetup. We'll meet this time at the Redmond Town Center Starbucks. We can choose a place to eat after we all find each other. Agenda items include documenting the hike, upcoming GLAM and diversity conferences, WikiConference USA in San Diego, Wiknic planning, and a brief update about our 501(c)(3) and plans for the rest of 2016. There *may* be an announcement with news from WMF (I'm waiting to hear back follow up from an initial email.) There will likely be time for additional agenda items and open discussion.
Hope to see you on Monday!
