Yesterday's UW Wikipedia Lab recap

Hello Cascadians, We had a great turnout yesterday at the UW Wikipedia Lab. CrystalRose Hudelson presented on "Women in Aviation Mechanics & Maintenance." About fifteen community members from businesses and organizations related to aviation attended. We segued from her presentation to introduce Wikipedia, how to edit, and why missing voices on Wikipedia matter. Of the new attendees, only one person knew how to edit Wikipedia. No one brought computers. It was definitely an opportunity to answer questions and plant seeds for future editing activities. We didn't have a sign in sheet -- something to remember for next time. However inviting a community member to make presentations on her areas of expertise was a fantastic way to bring new faces and voices to the Lab editing events. I'm attaching here a photo of CrystalRose (cc'd) - with a long torque wrench across her back. She also brought a 1/4" ratchet. She used her tools as a physical bar graph to demonstrate the disproportionate number of women to men in aviation maintenance. Great work and props!! Thanks CR, for coming out and for spreading the word about the event. :) I'm sharing a link to her presentation for folks interested in drawing on it or sharing in order to add new content to Wikipedia. Her presentation foregrounds the achievements of the Association of Women in Aviation Maintenance, which doesn't (yet) have a Wikipedia page. Wikipedia Asian Month in November

It looks like November has been designated as Wikipedia Asian Month: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Asian_Month The Seattle Wikimedians have a busy schedule in November. I'm thinking that we might be able to incorporate this theme into one or two of our upcoming UW editathons: "Port of Seattle" and "Economy of the Pacific Northwest." I'm wondering if we could do outreach to any of the Asian student clubs on campus. Thoughts? Any chance of getting an event on the Asian theme in Vancouver or Portland? Pine

Hi folks, Reminders and updates: Our *fall editathon series at UW *is continuing. This coming Monday our theme will be Women in Technology, with guest speaker Crystal Rose Hudelson on *women in aviation*. In the near future, English Wikipedia will reach the milestone of *5,000,000 edits*! Voting is underway to select a site logo to celebrate the occasion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/5_millionth_ar…. Also, an announcement from the community to the public is in development: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_million_articles This fall we'll need to have *board elections for next year*. As preparation for that, we need to get people registered as members for those who want to vote in elections and/or run for a board position. More information on that is likely to come in the next few weeks. A subject that we in the Seattle area are discussing is *our focus for winter quarter*, which may shift from UW to GLAMs that already have groups of volunteers and staff who might be interested in becoming editors on a more regular basis. Those staff and volunteers might be able to sustain some periodic Wikipedia activities at their "home museums", and/or they may be interested in joining Cascadia Wikimedians. We were pleased with the editathon at the Wing Luke Museum, and the current thinking is that we might visit a variety of GLAMs in winter quarter for similar events. Sorry, but I had to take the spam approach as I have been unable to guess at all the Cascadia area user names at wikiconference.org. If you are attending WikiConference USA, there is a a proposed Cascadia Wikimedians meetup. I threw together a userbox for anyone who wants to use it. The best explanation is this pointer to where I added it to my ENWP userpage: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Brianhe/Barnstars%2BUserBox… It takes just one parameter, "membership" which could be member, supporter, board member, or whatever. It's kind of tall because of the text below the logo. If we have a logo without the text, I can change it.

Free UW workshop series: intro to data science & programming - apply by October 2!

Greetings fellow Cascadians! By popular demand, I am helping organize yet another round of Community Data Science Workshop <http://wiki.communitydata.cc/Community_Data_Science_Workshops_(Fall_2015)> with Benjamin Mako Hill. Registration is open until October 2nd! Read on for details. The series consists of three-and-a-half day-long workshops in October and November. They are intended for anyone interested in learning how to use programming and data science tools to ask and answer questions about online communities like Wikipedia, Twitter, free and open source software projects, civic media, etc. These will be an improved version of the workshops we have run for the past two years <http://escience.washington.edu/blog/community-data-science-workshops-spring…> . The Community Data Science workshops are for people with no previous programming experience and, thanks to sponsorship from UW's eScience Institute <http://escience.washington.edu/> and Department of Communication <http://www.com.washington.edu/>, are free of charge and open to anyone. Our goal is that, after the three workshops, participants will be able to use web data and the Python programming language to gather and manipulate data, test hypotheses, and generate graphical visualizations to answer questions like: - Who are the most active or influential users of a particular Twitter hashtag? - Which bike routes in Seattle receive the most traffic on rainy Winter days? - Who has written the most Wikipedia articles about Harry Potter? The skills you learn in these workshops can be used to gather & analyze data from thousands of other sources. All you need is a lively imagination and an open API.
