Forwarding an announcement for those who follow WMF governance.
I feel that this is good news. Katherine is really good at building
relationships, and WMF needs a lot of that right now. I am hopeful for good
things to come. (:

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation executive transition update
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, "
wmfall(a)lists.wikimedia.org" <wmfall(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
I’m happy to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation leadership team has
proposed an interim Executive Director, and the Board has given our full
support. Starting on March 14th, current Chief Communications Officer
Katherine Maher (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Katherine_(WMF)) will
step into the role of interim Executive Director. We thank the C-levels for
their careful consideration in this process, and Katherine for stepping up
during this period of transition.
In choosing an interim ED, the C-levels started by identifying immediate
priorities for the coming months, including building trust, improving
communications, and filling key leadership positions. They felt, and we
agree, that Katherine is the right person to lead the organization while it
addresses these and other important issues. Additionally, this will allow
the rest of the executive team to focus on critical organizational
functions, including community and engineering management, fundraising, and
strengthening our human resources function. You can read more about our
process and thinking here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/Marc…
Katherine has been with the Foundation as Chief Communications Officer for
about two years now. During that time, she has developed a versatile and
effective team that serves the needs of the organization and movement,
collaborating closely with other departments and the community. She has
thoughtfully introduced new capacities and led her team through
transitions, and played a critical role in shepherding the strategy process
and the annual plan, in collaboration with other C-levels. She is known for
listening to and empowering the people that she works with.
For those who don’t know Katherine, she’s been a longtime advocate for
global open communities, culture, and technology. She previously led
advocacy for the international digital rights organization Access Now,
where she worked on freedom of expression, access to information, and
privacy. She has supported the efforts of citizens and governments around
the world to deepen transparency and participation in her roles at the
World Bank, National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, and
UNICEF (where her team built wikis for youth participation in major global
issues). She is a member of the advisory board of the Open Technology Fund.
With interim leadership in place, our next step as the Board is to move
quickly to plan and implement the search for a permanent Executive
Director. We will be working together over the coming weeks to clarify
roles and responsibilities in this search, and identify the best way for
community and staff to participate. We want this process to be inclusive
and incorporate many voices. We look forward to sharing an update on our
progress toward the end of next week.
As interim Executive Director, Katherine will report to the Board. Geoff
Brigham will continue serving as Board Secretary, and Jaime Villagomez as
Board Treasurer, reporting to the Board in those capacities. As of March
14, Katherine's reports include the C-team: Geoff Brigham, Jaime
Villagomez, Maggie Dennis, Lisa Gruwell, Joady Lohr, and Wes Moran. The
Communications team will continue to report to Katherine for the time
being, with support from the leadership of Juliet Barbara and Heather
Walls.
Thank you,
Patricio

Subject: [opensource-107] Seattle to host the 2016 OpenStreetMap State of
the Map US Conference
To: opensource-107-announce(a)meetup.com
I am excited to announce that Seattle was chosen to host the OpenStreetMap
2016 State of the Map US Conference. The conference will take place July
23-25 on SeattleU's campus. We chose SeattleU for their low cost, proximity
to Seattle and access to public transit. The food trucks near by didn't
hurt either.
We are looking for help! Let us know if you want to help. Request for
presentation proposals should be coming fairly soon. Start thinking about
what you want to present or teach.
The formal announcement can be found at:

For Wikimedia folks who are interested in possible collaborations with OSM,
now seems like a good time to start thinking about possible presentations.
Staff from the Wikimedia Foundation, and/or Wikimedia volunteers from
around the US outside of the Seattle area, may want to start thinking about
travel plans.
For Wikimedia volunteers outside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory, you
might consider applying for WMF Travel and Participation Support grants [1].
If you're inside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory and would like to attend
the conference, we may have funds in our budget that can support your
attendance. Contact me off-list for details.
Regards,
Pine

Hi All,
Today I had a blast photographing the Babbage Difference Engine
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Difference_engine> at Intellectual Ventures
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_Ventures> in Bellevue today.
I'll have the photos uploaded to Commons shortly.
I spoke with Paul C. Cabellon, who does public relations at Intellectual
Ventures about updating articles related to their research, and
contributing content, with consideration for COI issues. Paul wants to add
updated photos about the Mosquito laser
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquito_laser> to Commons, and have others
like me visit to photograph that project, and others. The company is
working to be as open as possible with their lab research and would like to
work with the Cascadia editors to improve coverage on these topics. There's
a rocket engine there next to the Difference Engine, and they have an
enormous Tesla coil set up. Lowell Wood
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_Wood> was wandering around while I
was there.
I suggested that Mako might want to involve some of his students in trips
to the lab to gather information about these projects like the mosquito
laser and others (vaccine storage, nuclear power etc).
So the issue is working out how to take advantage of this opportunity to
photograph the equipment and exhibits there, and update the related
articles with more recent published information, without promoting
Intellectual Ventures or creating other neutrality problems. I suggested
that Paul Cabellon join Wikimedia Cascadia and subscribe to this list to
discuss further with us both sending editors there, and attending editor
recruiting and training events.

Hi Mark!
Good to meet you at our grantwriting class. As discussed, I am CC'ing
the Wikimedia Cascadia email list presuming someone there has some time
to to assist you with your current and maybe future projects. I think
it's very important that organizations like yours is able to learn how
to use Wikipedia for public, long-term benefit.

I see that the group does not formally include Alaska, but I'm sure
there are individuals excited to help.
I am not as knowledgeable as those in the group. You had
questions/concerns about file format, copyright, and
archiving/accessibility use cases. Could you describe your project? Or
point us to a web page with project details? We could offer specific
suggestions on what you can do.
Cheers!

My DYK hook for the old Federal Reserve Bank Building
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_Bank_Building_(Seattle)> got
approved and is live on the main page, featuring a picture taken by Joe.
I'm slowly going to make my way through the endangered NRHP-listed
buildings in the area and give them the coverage they deserve. Next up is
the More Hall Annex <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:More_Hall_Annex>
(UW's decommissioned nuclear reactor).

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Italia recognized as OpenStreetMap chapter
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
after a long process, today Wikimedia Italia has been officially
recognized as the Italian OpenStreetMap chapter!
OpenStreetMap is a collaborative project that shares the same value as
the Wikimedia movement. It's not based on a wiki software and it's not
in the Wikimedia family, but from many points of views, it's the project
that is more similar to the Wikimedia ones; indeed, many wikipedians are
mappers also, and viceversa.
Similarly to Wikimedia, there is an OpenStreetMap Foundation (based in
the UK) and there are national OpenStreetMap chapters. In Italy, the
OpenStreetMap community has been talking for years about the creation of
a chapter. Most people felt that it was important, but also that
founding yet another association was pointless. Associations are not
built only on projects, but also, and mainly, on common values and on a
common vision: Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap share both, and it's just
natural to work together.
Wikimedia Italy officially started the process of becoming an
OpenStreetMap chapter in 2013 [1]. The association has supported
OpenStreetMap even before that (e.g., supporting the Italian
OpenStreetMap conference), and in the last two years, thanks also to the
work of many OpenStreetMap users that became members (and among them,
Simone Cortesi, OpenStreetMap volunteer since the beginning and WMI's
vicepresident), we have increased our efforts (as described also in
WMI's annual plan [2]). The recognition process has been quite long, but
today we've signed the chapters agreement, and now Italy is the second
country (after Iceland) to have an official OpenStreetMap chapter! (but
there are actually other unofficial chapters besides these two)
